Thanks. I wonder what the foreign object might be and what exactly was the damage. It would also be interesting to know why it took them almost 2 hours into the flight after flying past Taiwan before they return.

I asked my family members who just arrived earlier this afternoon but all they knew was "some sort of mechanical problem".

Maybe the pilots were talking to AC and trying determine if the aircraft had an issue that required attention, and flying almost 12 hours to YVR would not be optimal. Looks like they were at FL310 just before they started the turn back.
