10 hours to tow from US to Dom at YYZ

AC125 tonight from YYZ to YVR on fin 803 is taking a 50+ minute delay because they towed the aircraft over from US to Domestic late. The aircraft arrived from SFO at 8:00 AM, meaning they had 10+ hours to tow it to a domestic gate for AC125 to depart on time. How does this happen?

Further delay then taken due to catering not being onboard. These kinds of delays are infuriating because they appear to be completely within AC’s control.

That fin might not have been scheduled for the flight. It could have been parked safely out of the way, waiting on non-critical maintenance - or having 8 hours of maintenance done stoically in a hanger. Imagine, then, a worse off A/C landing, and the one in the hanger getting buttoned up and polished off, giving you only an hour delay.

It’s a good point, but it doesn’t appear to be the case here. The fin was planned for this flight, and I’m basing that on the AC app and Flightradar24.

If it was a maintenance issue, I would have expected them to say that. But what was said by GA and Captain was that the previous flight arrived at US and the plane had to be towed to dom. The previous flight for this fin arrived 12 hours ago from SFO.

When did you check?

Either way. There could have been 9 hours of maintenance needed, and they did that in a hanger, not taking up gate space on a day where gate space has caused other delays.

I checked at 10:00 AM today and again about 2.5 hours ago from the lounge.

Youre right it it could have been maintenance, but then why say it was towed from US because it arrived from US? (Rhetorical).

That helps. Thanks for posting that. Curious, can you tell what time the swap decision was made/decided?

Beyond the fin swap due to 803 being grounded for an MEL(minimum equipment list item) on the left hand logo light I think the rest of it refers to no denied boarding compensation being applicable. Or maybe not.

Per flightstats, it was changed from a 789 to 788 as of 3am local. Doesn't have as much detail as US carriers on tail numbers (first tail number assignment shown is at about 645 pm)

This is the full status posts on EF. Air Canada aircraft have fin #s so you can see FIN 803 listed below. (visible on the front gear cover and tail fin)

AC0125/14JUL EQU ACA788A01
CTY TML ARR DEP GRND AIR CABINS J O Y
YYZ - 1915 - 04.59
YVR 2114 TOTAL TIME YYZYVR 4.59
RMKS/WAS 789 NOW 788 DUE FIN803 YYZ MTC AOG TX MEL LH LOGO LIGH
T..NODB COMP APPLICABLE DLYD FOR CATERING
YYZ 2021 01:06L YVR 2218 01:04L 788 IFG AD EA
DEP TML T1 GATE --/D43
ARR TML M GATE --/-----

Also we know if a sight like FR24 lists an AC flight #, it often lists its registration #, for eg. on the Air Canada Fleet Page, you will see both the Fin # and the Registration.

Thanks for digging this up to educate us folks! Though if the logo light is actually on A/Cs MEL for this aircraft as a required item, there seem to be bigger problems at the airline.

Logo lights are recommended to be turned on during various phases of flight for visibility (i.e. safety) reasons.

I'm sure you've driven in poor conditions where another vehicle was hard to see, but legally had their lights off. I'd rather moving objects always have their lights on, as a delay is generally preferred to a collision.
