Any options for international ticket change due to medical condition?
my mother was just diagnosed with cancer and can not go on a London trip with my wife and I.
Aircanada wont let is take our son instead.
any options?
amex travel said they would "attempt to get a refund based on circumstances" which was nice.
thanks in advance for the advice

You should be able to get the ticket refunded for your mom with a doctor's note.
But you will most likely have to buy a new ticket for your son at today's prices.

Surely the amex cancellation insurance should cover the non-refundable part of the ticket. I had an accident which required knee surgery last year. We had to cancel a trip, and my amex covered the non-refundable portion. Now if the entire price is non-refundable, that could conceivably be over the card insurance limit, depending also upon the type of amex card. Read the fine print.

Somewhat surprised about the response to name change. A relative had a similar issue two years ago. They were able to pay a fee and get the name changed. However, it was not AC.

You’ll need to see what your fare rules entitle you to. On international trips rules for cancellation vary depending on things such as Basic/Standard/Flex/etc. but also by destination. I just looked up a random Standard fare that allowed cancellation with a $300 fee, which is waived for death if family member.
Unfortunately, I don’t know of any non-refundable international fares that allow for refund/fee waiver due to sickness (either of passenger or family member). I hate to be blunt, but that is what travel insurance is for (either stand-alone or via credit card).

They don't. But the tickets were bought on an Amex card, which should provide insurance covering the non-refundable portion. What I don't understand is that neither the OP or other posters seem to have paid attention to my previous article where I mentioned the Amex insurance. Anyway, should be a non-issue.

- Do all AMEX cards have travel insurance, or are there cheaper versions without?
- Does Amex travel accept forms of payment other than Amex? I thought I’d read some time ago that Amex travel isn’t really American Express anymore, but I could be mistaken.
