If you are impacted by this policy, you may contact Air Canada Reservations (1-888-247-2262).

If you purchased your ticket with AeroplanExternal site which may not meet accessibility guidelines., or Air Canada Vacations or your Travel agent, please contact them directly Some questions you may have are below with our answers, but if you can't find what you need, contact us at 1-888-247-2262, or reach out to us on on FacebookExternal site which may not meet accessibility guidelines. or TwitterExternal site which may not meet accessibility guidelines..

How many Boeing 737 MAX aircraft does Air Canada have?
Air Canada has a fleet of 24 Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft, which have been in operation since 2017. We have a total fleet of 400 aircraft (including 24 737MAX), comprising Air Canada mainline, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express aircraft.

Where do the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft fly to?
These aircraft operate flights across North America, to Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, as well as from Atlantic Canada to London Heathrow.

How many Boeing 737 MAX flights are there each day, and how many passengers are affected?
We typically operate approximately 75 Boeing 737 MAX flights daily out of a total schedule of approximately 1,600 daily flights system-wide, representing less than six percent of our total flying.

We have a total fleet of 400 aircraft (including 24 Boeing 737 MAX), comprising Air Canada mainline, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express aircraft.

What is Air Canada doing to reschedule customers?
We are making adjustments to our schedule to minimize the disruption to customers as much as possible, by optimizing the deployment of the rest of our fleet and looking at alternative options, including accommodating customers on other airlines.

As an example of some of our adjustments to Boeing 737 MAX flights cancelled, we have re-scheduled widebody aircraft to serve Hawaii starting today, March 13. Some flights will operate as scheduled with mainline or Air Canada Rouge aircraft, such as on Montreal-Martinique and Montreal-Guadeloupe. Other routes, notably Halifax-London and St. John's-London are cancelled in the short term, with customers being re-routed through our Montreal and Toronto hubs.

What should I do right now?
As changes are finalized in our flight schedule, customers whose flight times or flight numbers have changed can expect to receive an email detailing their updated itinerary. This information is also available in My Bookings on the Air Canada App.

If you are travelling soon, you can also contact us or your travel agent. Please understand that priority is being given to customers travelling within the next 72 hours.

We have also put in place a rebooking policy, space permitting, and without additional fees for affected customers. Given the magnitude of our Boeing 737 MAX operations, which on average carry nine to twelve thousand customers per day, customers can expect delays in rebooking and in reaching Air Canada's Call Centres.

Where can I go to for more information?
If you would like to know what type of aircraft you are flying on, simply retrieve your booking from the My Bookings tab, then click on the 'Details' link in the Flight Details section.

If you are travelling soon, you can contact us, reach out to our social media teams on FacebookExternal site which may not meet accessibility guidelines. or TwitterExternal site which may not meet accessibility guidelines., or call your travel agent.

We also advise you to check the status of your flight before going to the airport.

We thank all of our customers for their patience.

Will Air Canada cover my out-of-pocket expenses such as additional accommodation costs that I may incur as a result of these disruptions?
Our normal protocol for irregular events which are out of our control is in effect. We are regrettably unable to reimburse for such expenses.

More details …
  • There is very limited overhead space for luggage
  • No cavity under the seat in front so impossible to stretch your legs or stow anything there
  • Virtually no seat recline
  • Entertainment is a tiny screen that comes out of the armrest. Most of them didn't work
  • People struggled with getting out their tray tables
  • PA system barely worked. Announcements completely inaudible
This is in the cabin they sell as J. I can only imagine how bad it is in the back.

I'm no fan of the 7M8 but it might seem like a luxury ride compared with the Omni experience. Also worth noting is that the 7M8 flights were to be daily. That has been reduced to 3 (?) flights weekly.

It would appear AC is still optimistic about having the MAX available in September. As of now, for example, it seems the Omni 767 is only leased until September 2 at which point they still have the 737 scheduled.

Agreed, but easier said than done. I have a flight scheduled in November to OGG on the Max, if it's certified to fly again... I am booked, accommodation booked, got a decent deal, paid of Business class at a good price, etc... what other option do I have at that point? Probably nothing... Also, the issue is that 90% of the travelers have no clue what plane they're flying on, don't know how to check, which is which and hence airlines could easily get away with putting these back in the air with business as usual!

I am in roughly the same position, with my whole family booked to HNL in October. I hate the thought of flying on a MAX in the first few weeks or even months of service. My wife and kids know absolutely nothing of planes or aviation, but they do know that the MAX is a terrible plane that has had multiple crashes, so they are no more eager than I am. And while it’s possible that AC offers free changes for people on MAX flights, it’s not really relevant when there’s only one flight to a destination.

Useful up to date (not) info on the AC website accessed just now here:

"As the return to service date of the 737 MAX is unknown, to provide customers certainty for booking and travel, and for our internal planning purposes, Air Canada has removed 737 MAX aircraft from its schedule until July 1, 2019.
Our plans are flexible to reinstate the 737 MAX into our schedule sooner. This will depend on when government safety notices are lifted and international regulatory jurisdictions accept operations. As always, all decisions will be based on safety."

Don't be silly, it's just the LEFT hand not talking to the RIGHT hand, or AC's proof-reader quit.

BCN to YUL and back again

I am travelling J from BCN to YUL on AC 2403 this Saturday July 6, 2019 and again in September 2019. Apparently it a wet lease form Qatar Airlines due to the issues with the 737 Max. Has anyone flown this route in J recently to give me a heads up about what to expect?
Thanks

The wet lease is being discussed here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-...ect-ac-56.html

But I haven't seen anyone post about YUL-BCN yet. I am flying it tomorrow in J, will try and provide an update.

I'm looking at flights to LHR in April 2020 and the cheapest option is routing me through Halifax on the Max 8. Should I book it and then try to get them to switch me to the direct flight from YOW instead?

The current communique does not apply to bookings that far in advance, so if you do book it, be prepared for the possibility of actually flying it, or paying any associated change fees to move to another flight.

I think it is a stretch to argue that the MAX is a terrible plane. It has had two crashes related to software that interfered with the pilots being able to operate the aircraft safely. It is not going to be certified to fly again until such time as that is corrected and pilots can safely fly the aircraft. The investigation has certainly raised significant issues around how the aircraft was certified and Boeing's communication to the airlines and pilots about the MCAS software. It, like the generations of 737's before it, will likely continue to fly many people for many years to come, once the problems related to the MCAS software are corrected. There is little doubt that the recertification will be under a microscope and Boeing will be held to an appropriate standard regarding that recertification. I would feel very safe flying on a MAX once it is cleared to resume operations (in fact I have a flight YVR-PVR booked at the end of January that is scheduled on a 7M8).

I don’t disagree. My point was merely that my family who knows nothing at all about aviation do have strong feelings about the 737 MAX because of all the news stories around it. They could potentially feel strongly enough about it that they do not want to fly, especially if we happen to be on the first few flights when it returns to service.

If you're on this flight in J please report on the experience! I'm considering whether it's worth trying over normal mainline (for westbound, eastbound rather have a good hard product)
