R space fluctuations TATL
I don't usually follow R space at all so was wondering how much space fluctuates? There are a few TATL flights I'm looking at over summer that are pretty open (Z9 P9) but R0. If there is R space opened is it likely to only happen close to departure or is it constantly changing?

EF alerts are your friend here, but in most cases it's unusual for R to go from 0 to non-zero, especially months in advance.

I've seen R go from 0 to non-0 months in advance on a route I had an EF alert set for.
So all I can say is that I agree. Set an alert, and forget about it. A waitlisted upgrade may clear without R space opening as well, so all you can really do is wait and hope.
If there's still tons of space at the gate, the upgrade will clear regardless of R.

Thanks for your experiences. I've set up alerts on a bunch of flights but none (of about 10) have had any changes in the last week.
It's to book a priority reward and the more desirable options are R0. If it's unlikely to go up then it's probably best to book one of the less desirable options that are R1 before that disappears.

I have set many alerts on EF for R spaces. I have had many instances where R space appears months in advance (and months after I set the alert).
I have also had flight where R space never appears.

I have for sure had R space appear on domestic routings. I was waitlisted and I set EF to alert me if R was > 0.
One morning I woke up to 2 emails - the first from EF telling me that R was 1 and the other from AC telling me I had been upgraded. The second was a surprise but it's good to see the system working sometimes!

Forgive my m00b and blondness, but what is R? What class and what type within is it? (i.e. what restrictions, etc.)
By now I have gotten the hang of the lingo that:
F - first class
J - biz class
PY - prem eco
Y - economy

Or from full Y (Lat) or O right? Assuming you have status, if you don't it's a 7 day window.
Don't forget N which is where PY upgrades clear into, also the lowest PY bucket you can buy, but not where PY upgrade space comes from.
