Measles Exposure possible - Sun Jan 27, 4pm - 8pm

For anyone that travelled through YYZ on Sunday, Jan 27 between 4pm to 8pm, you may have been exposed to measles:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toron...sles-1.5007302

Those who were near people arriving aboard a Lufthansa flight — LH-470 — from Frankfurt at 4:08 p.m. may also have been exposed.

Also at risk are those connected to Air Canada flight AC-834 or LH-6829 that left Toronto at 6 p.m. for Montreal.

Yup, I arrived at 18:30. I am not worried about exposure. The anti-vaxers should be.

Well yes, assuming we were vaccinated back when the earth was still cooling.

Frankly, I am more annoyed with spending 15 hours with adults who cough without covering their mouths. I've lectured or glared at a few. I can never really figure out if they are stupid or just selfish.

Most likely both

Exclamation

Only 5 posts to wander off into the topic of vaccinations I see which is much faster than similar thread in the past so I'll inoculate this thread from further debate on that subject with this notice to please stick to the topic of possible exposure to AC passengers and not the larger debate about whether vaccinations are or are not needed.

Measles can remain viable in an area for several hours after the infected passenger leaves, right?

I hope this doesn't cause an outbreak like in Washington. Hard to imagine a worse place than an airport to spread disease.

I can imagine one - it's called an airplane.

Well I suspect either one would pretty quickly infect the other

But on their own, an airplane only takes the virus to one place. An airport's purpose is to spread people everywhere.

AC834 departed at 6pm, so I assume the extra 2 hour period for YYZ was to account for possible exposure even after the infected person left the area. I was at the airport after 6pm, but luckily did not wander down to Gate D24.

What about those passengers that continued on to GVA on that same plane? I assume the infected passenger got off at YUL since the article only mentions the segment to YUL. According to FlightAware, there was approximately 2h15min between arrival and departure for the 2 segments in YUL. I highly doubt they wiped down any surfaces or sanitized the plane during its short layover in YUL before continuing onto GVA... and there was probably less than 2 hrs between deplaning and boarding...

Yeah, me too, and in YYZ international departures. Although during that time I was walking over from the D gates and then in the MLL ... so I think the risk is low. Well that and I am vaccinated ;-)

Keep in mind that one shot of the measles vaccine is only about 83 percent effective. The second dose a few weeks later raises it to about 95 percent for a period of twenty years. Some people may think they are protected with the vaccine but it is still better to avoid exposure to the virus.
