AC putting the brakes on San Antonio non stops out of YYZ

Air Canada putting the brakes on San Antonio nonstops out of Toronto - Travelweek

MONTREAL — Air Canada is suspending its five times weekly nonstop service between San Antonio and Toronto, as the route did not meet projections.

The last day of operations for the route is scheduled for April 28, 2019.

Air Canada launched the route on May 1, 2017 with daily nonstop service operated by Air Canada Express.

I did this route the other week and both legs were half full. Lots of seat shuffling for W&B.

I think it's the second time they've cancelled it. Sad; I've used it several times.

That is a shame. I have travelled to Austin using the San Antonio flight and drove from there. It looks like the Austin flight will remain, but it is usually priced at 2x the San Antonio flight and has less favourable departure times.

There's a second (seasonal?) Austin flight going in, so hopefully that makes up for it a bit.

I guess you could say there were a few too many passengers who SAT out to make this route profitable

I use this route frequently myself, and have been worried this would happen sooner or later. I've seen it full (or nearly full) just a couple of times; often it's been less than half that.

I wonder if AC would ever add a YYC-AUS flight? WestJet recently announced direct service.

WS's service is only 2x weekly and seasonal. Driven by leisure traffic. That's really the type of thing that WS specializes in much more than AC out of YYC.

The rare routes that AC runs like that out of YYC often seem to have an AC Vacations tie-in, like the 1x weekly to HUX that they ran last year or some of the other Mexico stuff.
