Curious about AC's policy on lights out on daytime longhauls...

They "should be open"? Says who?
And "People have eye shades use them!" ???
People have reading lights. Use them.
I'm shocked at the attitudes in this thread. "I'm going to do what I want even if it negatively impacts the vast majority of other passengers. My needs are more important."

I presume people don't want the shade open / undimmed in lieu of reading lights. I presume it is for @24left's purposes - to enjoy and maybe even photograph the view.
If I'm trying to nap, reading lights bother me as much or more than window lights.
I don't care for eye shades either, but am not above putting a pashmina over my head.
And as far as what the "majority" want, I have never been informed that they are taking a poll of any sort.

This thread is really interesting and offers some insight into not just how some of us fly, how some of us determine comfort on long flights in particular, but also the issues of customer preference.
For those of you who do not fly on my AC 15, 3, 7, or 17 - all with some or many daytime hours, then you won't see all of those who work. They obviously need or want to do their work to finish some things or prepare for what they have ahead at destination.
As some of us have already said, when we are paying $5,000 or more for a (business class) ticket across the ocean, you're not going to tell us when to sleep, eat or work. If we want to do so with natural light or overhead light, we can. Many of us use the eye shades and blanket to manage the light issue.
For those of us who sit in Y or PE on long flights, and who are FFs or read this forum etc, we know we have the option of bringing our own eyeshades just as many bring their own headphones to block sound.
You should all be concerned if there comes a day when an AC SD walks the cabin asking for a show of hands as to who wants shares open or closed or cabin lights on or off.
When I board AC 8 and want to sleep first for a few hours, I don't demand that the crew dim the lights. It's the start of drink and meal service. I just pull the blanket over and let others enjoy their meals.
Love this forum. Always fascinated by some of the topics and comments.

But this pales, for me, compared to crew blathering loudly all night in the galley. Audible even through noise cancellers, white noise app, blanket and pillow. That’s plain discourteous. Someone who needs light to work might not be suiting my plans but they are perfectly entitled and I can work around.

- It was fully dark outside for the entire flight (you leave at midnight, fly with the night, and land at 5am)
- There were predicted Aurora Borealis for that night, and I explicitly asked the SD if he could leave the shades undarkened so that I could see and hopefully photograph it.
Frustrating.
