People have reading lights. Use them.

I'm shocked at the attitudes in this thread. "I'm going to do what I want even if it negatively impacts the vast majority of other passengers. My needs are more important."
The thread started because of the observation that FAs are dimming windows and darkening the cabin during the daytime irrespective of customer desires. Sorry, we call them pax here to minimize the importance of their desires and emphasize just how much like cargo they are.

I presume people don't want the shade open / undimmed in lieu of reading lights. I presume it is for @24left's purposes - to enjoy and maybe even photograph the view.
If I'm trying to nap, reading lights bother me as much or more than window lights.
I don't care for eye shades either, but am not above putting a pashmina over my head.
And as far as what the "majority" want, I have never been informed that they are taking a poll of any sort.

No right or wrong?. Fully open / no dim blinds send shafts of bright light into co pax eyes and screens. Wakes me even with eye cover and have to put blanket over head until I then wake with hypercapnea and hypoxia 😄. Pitch black makes working horrible and adjusting to time zones hard. Presumably trick is to find a sweet spot. A bit of dim/not fully up when possible and if an unforgettable scene appears be quick with photo. Many pax pay the extra $ in J to sleep. Y / PY IMO its who owns window given if you can sleep there a bit of light is unlikely to be an issue. SD forcing their preference on all not good.

.....
Indeed it is.

Agree. Reading lights on some of the aircraft are worse than natural light for a number of reasons. Some are harsh lighting themselves. On the 787s, they can be angled and I've had someone else's lights in my eyes or at angles that are uncomfortable.

Exactly.

This thread is really interesting and offers some insight into not just how some of us fly, how some of us determine comfort on long flights in particular, but also the issues of customer preference.

For those of you who do not fly on my AC 15, 3, 7, or 17 - all with some or many daytime hours, then you won't see all of those who work. They obviously need or want to do their work to finish some things or prepare for what they have ahead at destination.

As some of us have already said, when we are paying $5,000 or more for a (business class) ticket across the ocean, you're not going to tell us when to sleep, eat or work. If we want to do so with natural light or overhead light, we can. Many of us use the eye shades and blanket to manage the light issue.

For those of us who sit in Y or PE on long flights, and who are FFs or read this forum etc, we know we have the option of bringing our own eyeshades just as many bring their own headphones to block sound.

You should all be concerned if there comes a day when an AC SD walks the cabin asking for a show of hands as to who wants shares open or closed or cabin lights on or off.

When I board AC 8 and want to sleep first for a few hours, I don't demand that the crew dim the lights. It's the start of drink and meal service. I just pull the blanket over and let others enjoy their meals.

Love this forum. Always fascinated by some of the topics and comments.

But this pales, for me, compared to crew blathering loudly all night in the galley. Audible even through noise cancellers, white noise app, blanket and pillow. That’s plain discourteous. Someone who needs light to work might not be suiting my plans but they are perfectly entitled and I can work around.

Uhh...my DEL-YYZ flight had the shade locked 'dark' the entire trip (and this included being on the ground in DEL).

Focus. This thread is about window shades and light. We have other threads for crew noise. I think.

For me, the saving grace on a 777 is always the window in the washroom, out of which some of my best tropical island and arctic photos have been taken.

I had almost exactly the same experience, and this despite the facts that:
  1. It was fully dark outside for the entire flight (you leave at midnight, fly with the night, and land at 5am)
  2. There were predicted Aurora Borealis for that night, and I explicitly asked the SD if he could leave the shades undarkened so that I could see and hopefully photograph it.
The SD agreed, said "sure, no problem" .... but either he forgot, or perhaps went for a crew rest and didn't tell the rest of the crew. Either way, it wasn't until about two hours before landing that I discovered (despite my request, and the camera very visibly mounted to my 1K window), that the shades were not only fully dark - but were locked that way.

Frustrating.

Wing porn is so much better than AC food porn. Take my word for it.
And even if under the blanket, the food isn't going anywhere but if light outside, I might miss a great view.
