Planning travel to LHR next month & direct YYT-LHR has stopped. Looking at via YYZ and 848/9 & I see this is a 777-300. Is this the dreaded HD? I'll be in Y rather than PY or J.

All 777s are HD. That only referred to the original 777s that were 10 across seating, but since the rest of the fleet was reconfigured, now the only difference between the original HD and the rest of the fleet is the size of the J cabin.
YYT-LHR is still operating, but only Wed/Fri. YHZ-LHR operates 4x/week. Both of those are on the 7M8 which has a roughly similar Y cabin to the 777s (and 787s) in terms of seat width and pitch.

28 J seat 777-300:
in J: lavs by the 2nd exit shared with PY (and Y)
In PY: may have older IFE system. Better access to lavs.
40 J seat 777-300:
In J: 2nd exit lavs for J only.
In PY: new Panasonic IFE. Poorer access to lavs. Need to walk back into Y.

I've only ever done PY or J but have an upcoming YYZ-YVR on a 777 in Y. At least I get the preferred seat, and I will of course attempt an eUp but in case I actually end up in Y what particular dimension of hell have I signed up for?

The 777s were fine in Y when AC first got them ... in the original 9 across seating.
Today everything is HD. If your upgrade doesn't clear, you're facing hours of discomfort in something that's little more than a bloated CRJ.
