Different bag fee on outbound vs return??
Howdy,
I am Star Gold, booked a UA codeshare return to Montreal, Air Canada metal.
On the way out I got charged for bags. On the way back I didn't.
What's going on?

How many bags? All AC operated? Perhaps an error, in which case you could write to whoever took your money for a refund.

It was probably the fare code then, I'll take it up with my travel agent. I was just weirded out, because it had never happened before, and then was (seemingly) inconsistent.

OP - You have not provided near enough information for anybody to help you. This might be very simple.
You list IAH as your "location." If this ticket was a departure or destination in the US, then the base bag allowance for the marketing carrier of the first segment applies to all segments, including the return.
So, need to know:
1. What carrier is "marketing"? Depending on your answer to #2 , operating, codeshares, fare basis and all that may not matter.
2. What was the full routing?
3. If this originated in the US, what does your e-ticket receipt show for a baggage allowance for each of the segments in question?
