Business Class Pilots Take Priority Deadheading
Air Canada here is an example.
Rather than making revenue off of those willing to pay to upgrade, states that their cabin is full. It is not full. 3-4 seats have crew members in them. Why would they do that. It is truly odd. Why would they not want to make revenue??

Because if those pilots don't get where they need to go AC will have to cancel the flight(s) they're operating, and that loss dwarfs whatever your paid upgrade would cost. Their contract guarantees them J.

As on all threads on this topic, crew travelling for duty have positive space in business.
This is not the same as crew commuting in their own time.
No one knows the reason these crew on your flight were travelling.

FAs are also entitled to J, but after upgrades clear.
Deadheading pilots will get J before any gate upgrades are processed.
