FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jc94
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

Serious(ly offensive) question:

Are you all rich?

I see and hear about some of your travel patterns and wonder how the bleep you pull off full J fare to the ends of the earth all the time.

While perhaps not directed at me... I’ve never spent more than $4k on a trip (2-5 segments).

However I’ve done $10k trips on OPM...

Other than personal travel, it's all OPM for me.

Vancouver is a long way from almost anywhere, so travel in J is permitted by my employer for the trips I take. My AQD per segment this year is averaging around $1K as a result.

That's the problem for me. I'm only allowed Premium Economy anything over 6 hours (incl connections) unless written approval blah blah blah.

Not really wanting to write emails to my boss based in Italy asking for business tix. Also, all of my transborder trips are 6+ but premium economy within NA is near impossible save for a widebody flight to YYZ as a starting point.

I'm just in a whiny mood today. Move along...

Must be the rain.

Or the cloudy skies.

Or the smoke.

As always, my advice is to drink heavily.

It's only an offensive question if the person who answers you is offended.

Well, some of us know each other, some of us are friends or related or whatever. I don't ask anyone else how they pay for their travel, only a couple of people seem brave enough to ask others (which may poke the bear )

Many here reveal they are OPM, others point out that all of their travel is personal and leisure, some have both. Also, you don't know if all of the travel discussed is paid or partly paid and partly miles. And it really doesn't matter.

Someone needs a hug or as was suggested, copious amounts of alcohol. I'd go for chocolate and salty crunchy crispy snacks or do a face plant in a bowl of pasta.

Count me in. After a very hard day my wife and I polished off more than half a Costco box of Lindor last night. The pile of wrappers was embarrassing.
