Is this a good deal? YVR-HKG 150,000pts for Business ticket

Hi flyertalk,

Can anyone comment if this a good deal?

I'm needing to go to Hong Kong for a friends wedding in September 2018.
I found the following on Aeroplan website:

Sep 20-Oct 1, 2018
- 150,000 points in Business Class
- Taxes are $227.71
- Direct flights
- YVR-HKG, with Air Canada
- HKG-YVR, with Air Canada

Is this probably as good as it's going to get for me?

Thanks!

Yup, I believe it's the standard rate! Go ahead with it!

I personally prefer to redeem points for YYC-JNB because it's a longer flight. Same points for more distance. Also, Asian business class fares are quite cheap compared to South Africa. But you may never fly to South Africa.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you mean you would rather pay for the flight to Asia with cash, and then use the points to go to South America instead?

He said South Africa, not South America. Of course it's only a good value if you actually want to go to South Africa! If you have the points and need to go to HKG, then I would use the points. Saves cash out of your pocket to a low tax destination (fees and taxes to LHR would be in the ~$1200 range for example).

I personally don't like to hoard points and have a large balance, I think they are a very fleeting currency subject to occasionally large devaluations. Earn and burn is the motto to ensure you actually get value out of them.

Well, only you can answer this question. As others mentioned, it may be better for you if you pay for this flight and use the miles to redeem for a more expensive flight.

If you are willing to make one stop, then probably not. There are many Asian carriers flying to both YVR and HKG with better service than AC and/or less tax.

That's right. I can either pay $3500 cash for business class flight to Asia or $4500 for business class to South Africa and use points on the other. But only if you expect to go to SA.

If you have the time, you can even add a flight to somewhere out of HKG to the same region of Asia and back to HKG or back to directly home... or YVR-HKG and return YVR-anywhere in Canada in case you want to visit anyone on the way home.

The best part of aeroplan is the multiple stops and open jaws.

Points are there to be used. If you found the flight you want, on the date you want, with the class you want and have the points to 'spend' then I would do it. Let us know if the flight you saw is still available... they come and go.

150,000 for YVR-HKG business is the standard or "classic" reward rate.

As a non-super elite, finding a round-trip YVR-HKG business on Air Canada metal can be challenging. As a super elite with IKK / Priority Rewards, 150,000 for YVR-HKG round trip business on AC metal is doable.
