Asked to remove hat by GA
Wearing my baseball cap like i do often when flying all day.
I was asked to remove it as i presented BP and ID. I think this was in YXE. On another flight from YEG-YVR I thought I heard the GA say hats had to be removed as you approach counter during his announcements. The GA who took my BP did not ask me to remove it though. Is this a one off or a new procedure? If it is now procedure, there is potential for trouble here... |
What trouble? Take off the hat if that is their requirement.
Put it on again after you board. |

My suspicion, based on where this occurred, is that it's to match your ID.
Different jurisdictions have different laws on what can and cannot be worn in IDs, but religious headwear is often allowed. Also, there's a huge difference between being asked to remove your hat and being asked to remove your turban or yarmulke. Though I suspect even then, it would be more the removal of a hijab that would cause problems. |
Anyone tried to pass through immigration/passport control with hats?
I guess that's why GA made that announcement. |

Who knows, maybe they were a new hire and just being extra buttocks? |
When my daughter was 16 she had a pretty bad accident and hurt her eyes. She wore sunglasses for about 8 months out of vanity as she didn't like the way her eyes looked. AC GA (and other airlines + border security employees) asked her to take off her glasses, it wasn't a big deal, I just assumed they just wanted to make sure she wasn't wearing a disguise.

This has to be a one off.. I mean if you pay attention to the number of people wearing baseball caps (amongst other types of hats that are not religious wear) at the boarding area alone... for any given flight...
... ... I've been asked to remove my hat at a bar when being carded... I wanted to consume alcohol, so I obliged. |
Sounds like it was a reasonable request and specifically for a security ID check. Not worth fighting it, IMO.

Flying on AA from YYZ - DFW yesterday they made an announcement asking everyone to remove hats and sunglasses when they presented their boarding passes to the gate agent.
I don't recall hearing that announcement before. |
The GA is simply doing his/her job to ensure IDs are matched. That said, he/she is also reminding travelers how to use said hat in a polite fashion. Wearing hats indoors is rude. The army taught this to me when I was a reservist.
Surprised I have to link this: https://www.thespruce.com/etiquette-...ndoors-1216685 |
Wearing hats is mandatory for some religions. It is not rude. Rude comes from one POV, It is inappropriate to generalize to everyone.

You can start a Hat Lives Movement ;)
