AC 747-400; Who remembers these birds?!!?

Who remembers these birds?!!?

Are these the ones that had the proprietary floors for extra heavy freight loads?

Unsure. All I can say is that this is not in YVR.

I only see one at least.

Got stuck in the nose once. Seats weren't even lie-flat and you had to share your space. Kids today don't know how easy they've got it.

The combi were in AC service for a long time.

That said, long after they left AC service, I remember riding on one with EVA between Taipei to Honk Kong. I think others also used them.

Not certain which routes AC operated the 747 on. I remember ridging them a few times to Heathrow out of YYC. I think it was only a summer thing.

Those combis were heavier due to the strengthened main deck.

They were therfore relatively more expensive to operate when in all passenger role.

We often flew on these YYZ-FRA. They had J in front in the nose, and upstairs, 2-2. Actually they were nice. I still remember, back in 2000, my wiife managed to get Aeroplan miles on an Aeroplan reward when an agent decided her aeroplan number was missing and added it.

They were retired in 2003. Apparently never made AC any money.

They were never really in all passenger role. The cabin only went to a bit more than the half of the length and the tail section was pure freight.

Both your puctures are ex CP 747's, therefore not the comb.

Correct. And I believe so is the interior.

This said, from outside one cannot tell the difference.

Actual, AC's 747-400 combi were not in service very long. They spent most of their AC life in storage. They were bought for the YVR-HKG route, but the Canadian government would not let AC fly that route for a long time, to protect Canadian airlines. Once they started flying that route, the Canadian government capped AC to 3 flights were week.

AC did fly the 747-200 combi for many years.

You can tell from the outside. The combi' had large cargo doors on their side.

The last time I remember flying on an AC 747 was YYZ to YVR in the summer of 2002 on an Aeroplan redemption. Sat in the 2x2 upstairs recliners, and only 3 other passengers on the upper deck of the flight. I also recall non-functional IFE from a small screen on a swing arm from the seat.

Edit - I just looked up what I paid for the taxes on that round-trip J redemption: $20.16!

you can tell from the outside. If you see a picture of one it is evident. If you check the link and look at the second passenger door from the right you can see the cargo door just after it.

I loved the 744. Last time I had the thrill of flying on one was in I believe 1991
HNL-YVR with my wife & 2 kids . We had bulkhead seats with a ton of legroom.
It was aboard CP tail # 881 C-GMWW "The Maxwell Ward". CP had just taken delivery of it.
This A/C was scrapped in Dec 2013 at MZJ. Gone but not forgotten.

After the merge of AC and CP, I think they used these combo aircrafts between YYC and LHR. I flew a few times...
