Is there any airliner that isn't a failure? I don't know how much is hidden in the accounting whereby losses are carried forward, so I suspect the 737, an ancient plane if ever there was one, is probably a success. But nothing interesting, like Concorde or 747 or A380 is ever a success in pure financial terms.

Accordingly, I don't think you'll find many flyers of Concorde (or A380) who tell you that the aircraft is a failure, though an investor with a shorter term horizon may think so.

Not quite that bleak. Most plane prjects end up with a positive cash flow. Including the 747, but surely not the 380. The 320 series definitely. Most Boeing, except possibly the 757, and likely not yet the 787. Probably not the 340 either, although the 330/340 was essentially one project and as such I would think it ended up with positive cash flow.

Of course the Concorde was the worst of them all. But then, that was not really the goal.

Quick and easy way to tell is the 100/200 have a spiral staircase to the upper deck, 400 is a straight staircase.

Obviously also the length of the upper deck. And number of windows.

When it comes to the -100 and -200, configuration must have changed over the years.

Pretty sure I flew on an AC -100 that had Y upstairs. LHR-YYC mid 90s. Plane went mechanical; they had to fly another one in, and then dropped us at YEG because they needed the plane ASAP.

you made me google this .. i did get the date wrong. it was 2004 (not 2005 or 2003), and it was fall, as in those days i flew to FRA every year in March and October.

"On 31 October 2004, the last Air Canada Boeing 747 flight landed in Toronto from Frankfurt as AC873, ending 33 years of 747 service with the airline."

I don't have a seat map, but there were two J cabins, one in front of the main doors, something like four rows of two seats on each side, plus one single seat in the middle in the last row. Upstairs there were four or five rows of 2 seats on each side.

I liked row 1. First in the nose.

And they would still manage to get you a steak reasonably rare if asked. :-)

I have fond memories of YUL-MIA trips in first class on the 742 in the 80s. So quiet up near the nose and my favourite plane ever. Remember putting the Aeroplan stickers on the paper tickets as well.
