Ac Awards

This may seem a silly question but do you think it is safe to use my Mileage Plus Miles to book an award trip for next year.I keep thinking that the Canadian government could not afford to let AC go down the gurgler.

I think the reality is - you are better off worrying whether UA will be around to honor that ticket rather than whether AC will be around.

And who would thought the Swiss Government would let Swissair to go down and it did.

My view is that Ottawa is very unwilling to pump cash into AC. They may help AC but in what form, I don't know. The Government isn't so concerned with your mileage account balance, they are more worried about the disruption of transportation and how it will affect businesses and the people in general. So they might focus on this goal when helping AC and the accounts may/may not survive.

They may not pay their creditors but they will likely honor tickets. That is where there bread and butter comes from.

Even if aeroplan and everything tubes (unlikely), Air Canada will still be around and will be honoring those tickets.

This is not like they are in receivership and liquidating, they are just restructuring. There will be lots of fallout but in the end I think a stronger entity will emerge.

Bondbomber,I guess that is my gut feeling .I get the impression that UA is going to survive especially now that US has come out of chapter 11 and the congress is providing 3 million odd dollars for support to US carriers.

Not a great comparison, at least to me. Switzerland an entirely different case given its small size, super rail network, central geographical location in Europe, etc. The Swiss government obviously felt it citizens could survive without the orginal Swissair. Of course Canada could survive without AC but it would isolate certain areas of this vast land and that may be very unpopular politically.
