Refund on seat selection fee if using eUpgrade

I have an AE economy award on a 777 in August, YYZ-YVR. I am considering purchasing a seat in the PE "cabin" (albeit no enhanced service on this domestic transcon) but could also use my eUpgrades to get a J pod with-in 24 hours of travel (with a $300 copay). If I go ahead and purchase the PE seat ($123) and at OLCI decide to copay for the upgrade to J, will the PE seat fee be refunded? Is the seat fee normally refunded when purchasing a LMU which if offered, may be the same price as the eUpgrade copay?

(Searched in vain for an existing three on this topic, but located nothing.)

What are you considering buying? A preferred seat or an N/E/O fare?

Actually you should get domestic PE on the 777 which is being re-introduced July 1 (see https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/...html#/20170609). It begs the question - will that be considered an upgrade?

Regardless, I'm pretty sure you will get your preferred seat fees refunded if you e-up to J but I cannot seem to find the reference anywhere. Weird.

You can't use Eupgrades on award tickets.

What SparseFlyer said.

You can't buy O cabin as a preferred seat.

You either buy Y and pay for a preferred seat in the Y cabin, or you pay to upgrade to O cabin, or pay for O cabin outright.

O cabin is no longer "Y cabin preferred seating" as of July 1.

Nomad is right. PE cabin is only through upgrades and while it is only one e-upgrade credit there is no way to upgrade an Aeroplan x fare ticket.

There is a promo to upgrade to J on an X ticket within 24 hours of departure with 10 e-up credit's and a $300 copay (between YYZ & YVR) but it is scheduled to end on July 31... and you're leaving in August.

Maybe AC will extend this promo (as it was extended once before).

I've not been following much around here lately so thanks for the multiple clarifications. Odd that they would be selling the PE cash seat upgrade if it was becoming more than just a preferred seat. Didn't know the eUpgrade from X was ending next month, will have to go back to the AC site and check a few things out. Thanks all.

------------------

Just checked my booking and it appears the option for a PE seat is now gone. That section has been removed from the economy cabin.

Yep, as expected.

PE aka PY aka O (I like to call it O unlike everyone else) system wide is now going to legit O service... not just the seat and Y service anymore like it was in the domestic preferred seating days.

Does anybody know the answer to the thread subject? Refund on seat selection fee if using eUpgrade? [non award ticket]

Edit:

It looks like it is not:

Advance standard seat selection charges are non refundable, except if:
  • you are moved to a seat different than the one you selected due to an involuntary schedule or airport change (e.g. flight disruption, cancellation). If you are moved from your seat for one of these reasons, you may request a refundfor your seat charges.
  • you decide not to travel on your selected itinerary and you paid for advance standard seat selection. The value of your advance standard seat selection charge will be retained and can be applied towards seat selection on a future Air Canada itinerary.

Hi

I always book a preferred seat in case my e-upgrade doesn't clear. Every time I get an e-upgrade I get a refund almost instantaneously for my seat selection fee, but I am using a Flex flight pass so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Not that I've eUp'ed a flight this year, but whenever I have it's always been immediately and automatic. I get two emails at the same time - upgrade approved and seat selection refunded. Seen similar reports here before as well, for all types of upgrades.
It's one of the few things AC IT is excellent at.

Refund

I can confirm that you will automatically get the refund as soon as you use the E upgrade to business class.

I just upgraded my ticket after purchasing preferred seats and I immediately got an email from Air Canada with the refund I just did this with the thought that I might not get the refund but it happens instantaneously

I have been waiting 6 weeks for a refund to occur after getting an e-upgrade.
Phoned in to request and agent was unhelpful and said to request online.
Submitted a formal request for a refund via the online tool and not a word.

Not happy with the process.

This works for me to. What does not work is if the upgrade clears at the gate. In that case I get no refund. Last time this happened I submitted a request online and got a refund a couple days later.

I'm not sure if you are supposed to get a refund if the upgrade clears at the gate though .
