Can someone explain pricing
Hi
Looking to upgrade my mom's ticket to Rome. She has a premium economy ticket Oct 19 (back later in the month). I understand that upgrading the ticket would cost the fare difference, and not also a change fee. A single business class ticket to Rome on Oct 19 is $2100 and change. If I bought two tickets (or more), each is $1500 and a bit. I've seen two tickets cost more when a fare class has but one seat left but this seems unusual. Or is it? |

Not sure any of us can tell you whether you should spend more money. It's up to you to decide the value proposition. Airline pricing and mysteries of revenue management are well above my pay grade at least. :D |

Not unusual. It is called an 'accompanied travel' fare and is only available if the rules are met (in this case, at least 2 people on the booking).

Like many things that seem strange in pricing for airline tickets, it's likely an effort to separate those who are willing to pay more from those who aren't. Solo travellers are more likely to be corporate travellers who have less sensitivity to price than leisure travellers. You can't tell a business traveller from a leisure traveller easily, but you can tell a few markers: travelling alone, no weekend stay, flying on a Monday morning / Thursday afternoon / Friday afternoon, booking at short notice, changing tickets at short notice, etc.
So they charge more for those things in order to try to get more money from those who are less price sensitive. |
