but sometimes it is easier (and cheaper/QUICKER) to buy the existing product/company/customers, hence the whole M&A market/strategy
latest case being AMZN bought Whole Foods for $14B
Anyway, we can't predict what'll happen so let's all wait and see

Air Canada already has access to 100% of traveler data. Everyone is: flying and put their number in to collect points, flying in on points, or doesn't matter.
If AP is twice as friendly in negoiating with AC as they are with actual people, the savings will come from that. AC can just up and order staff, or pay IBM, or TATA, or whoever to do something (less their ability to hire and PM, of course). AC will save in not having their minimum wage phone agents waiting on the phone talking to minimum wage AP agents for trivial changes.
When you are divorced and want to settle down again, you find a new person, not hook up with the ex who has been raiding the fridge for a decade when checking on the kids.

AC only has data on customers' FLIGHTS
while AP has data on customers' spending habits (assuming they used AP cards where they shop) - gas, grocery, travel, etc... just like Air Miles

Predicted date of Air Canada / Aeroplan lawsuit
In my mind, it's inevitable.
Either Aeroplan sues Air Canada for some reason with respect to the launch of its' own program, or Air Canada sues Aeroplan for some type of breach.
I just can't see this current mess ending well. Lawsuits seem somehow inevitable given the rapid and massive share value destruction.
I pick June 16, 2018. No reason why. Just want to put it out there.

Aeroplan suing Air Canada or consumers suing one or both?
Aeroplan has no basis to sue Air Canada as they simply made an announcement completely consistent with the terms of their contract with Aeroplan.
As for consumers? Good luck, nothing to sue about until there is actual damage in 2020.

Neither one of these companies are particularly trusted by customers, I somehow doubt they fully trust the other.

yah it is rather counter-intuitive, maybe they shopping around for new partners? who cares as long as they continue down this path so we can burn the miles before mid 2018.

I expect customer friendly changes will be the norm from them (and AC and Airmiles) for the next few years, in preparation for the upcoming battle.

I think the explanation is rather simple. People hate them, but traditionally didn't have an option but to deal with them. Now that AC has announced, AP needs to build up as much goodwill as possible so that they can convince people to stay engaged with AP credit cards and partners in 2020.

how does airmiles do it, when customer finds non existent flight inventory, AM pays full fare or discounted like an OTA? u think AP will try to do the same?
