Such that it is actually searchable text - one of the important changes to the Aeroplan program in 2019 for Super Elites:

New for Air Canada Altitude Super Elite 100K members: Complimentary changes and refunds
Beginning July 15, 2019, Air Canada Super Elite 100K members will no longer be charged a fee when they request a change to their Flight Reward booking. Additionally, these members will also no longer be charged a fee to refund their bookings. These fee waivers will apply to all bookings, including those made prior to the new policy coming into effect.

What is "neutral stock"??
Tickets issued directly by the airline come from internal forms, usually beginning with 2. Air Canada uses forms 2100 to 2199 for all tickets they issue internally. So AC issued tickets are 014 2100 000000 to 014 2199 999999. Once those numbers are used they reset and go back to the beginning. Aeroplan's tickets fall into this range.

The following 3 ticket numbers from different airlines could exist and be active at the same time:

- 014 2125 123456 (from AC)
- 016 2125 123456 (from UA)
- 001 2125 123456 (from AA)

Travel agencies issuing in the GDS use neutral forms that are not tied to a particular airline.

So if you are on form 8605, and you issue a ticket on AC, then a ticket on UA, then a ticket on AA, you will end up with

- 014 8605 000001
- 016 8605 000002
- 001 8605 000003

This is the same as in paper tickets - the ticket stock is neutral and is used to plate tickets for any airline, but the tickets are issued by the agency, not directly by the airline.

In the context of Aeroplan tickets - they are issued directly by Air Canada on their internal ticket stock.

Yap, Aimia can go to zero, or it can go up a lot.

Or not.

Air Canada frequent flyer program part of digitization push, CEO says

https://www.thespec.com/news-story/7...push-ceo-says/

MONTREAL — Air Canada's plans to develop its own frequent flyer program are one of several digitization initiatives the airline is pursuing to meet the varying needs of its 45 million passengers a year, CEO Calin Rovinescu says.

Weeks after Air Canada announced it was ditching Aeroplan, Rovinescu said the decision was part of the company's broader strategy to become more digital in its operations. That includes looking at working with artificial intelligence specialists to recognize patterns in customer data and employing augmented reality to change how employees learn and collaborate.

Using data analytics on information collected from frequent flyers will help the airline better understand their shopping patterns, improve service and build loyalty, Rovinescu said. Air Canada plans to launch its own loyalty rewards plan in 2020.

"By bringing it in house, it will enable us to be much, much closer to our customers in terms of the offers that can be made and having the ability to in some respects deal directly with our key frequent flyers," he said in an interview.

Typical corporate speak for wringing greater returns from customers BUT if they can actually deliver more closely what each customer actually wants AND get more $$$ at the same time - I guess that's good business for everyone.

Interesting that they refer to a big push on "data analytics" - Aimia (Aeroplan) identifies themselves as a data analytics business; is the Aeroplan fall-out with AC partly due to their lack of actual data analytics expertise and systems or price they'd charge to do that for AC?

So AC thinks they will do & build everything AIMIA does cheaper? from scratch?
$2B NPV at what cost?

Honestly the best solution is/WAS for AC to buyout AIMIA instead

Sometimes it is easier to build a new solution from scratch than it is to invest money to fix a broken one.

Except that I you count goodwill this is simply not true in this case. There is no way the savings would offset the value of goodwill lost.
