There's a non-zero chance he's given it for free.
There's a non-zero chance he's given a buy-up offer.
But the cost of a mileage run will definitely be lower than the cost of a buy-up offer.

... and less stressful than waiting (and hoping) to be given a buy-up offer, too.

I would 100% do a mileage run if I were in his shoes, but alas, he does not enjoy flying as much as us!
He thinks he has been away enough already this year, and I quote "zero desire" to do a mileage run...Lol

Update for the situation in the above posts!
His AQD is now looking like it will be between 13,000 and 15,000 by year-end, and he will have about 46,000 miles (maybe slightly more). I am wondering if the fact that he has such a high AQD amount may convince them to push him up to E50K instead of down to E35K (with some other underlying factors as outlined above). Of course, we will have to wait until the end of the year to find out! And a lesson learned for me, I will make sure he always picks lower requalification level from now on...

Thanks for the tip cow! The only dilemma is you miss out on like 20 eUpgrade credits by waiting until October. You would get them at that point of course, but it isn't much use with only four months remaining.

Well at the very least, wait until you run out of the core eUps before selecting.
