This is another incentive for me to accumulate points with flexible rewards programs such as Amex MR or SPG, so I that I can avoid being bound by the shenanigans of the crooks that operate Aeroplan
Someone has to pay to fix the daily online outages

Next up, $125 for changes/cancellations?

And I was annoyed when UA implemented a charge for changes/cancellation on Star Alliance partner tickets less than 24 hrs before departure!

At one time no fee for cancelling and all points returned.

What I want to know is.. ... is going on when they have those outrages? What is actually happening from a technical perspective. I just don't understand

That was before AC sold Aeroplan.

I assume you meant "outages".....on Aeroplan's site

Because "outrages" is more likely the stuff you'll find here at AC FT Central

Outages.. outrages.. same thing when it comes with aeroplan isn't it?

And yes I meant outages. I want to know what they're doing with their damn IT setup and why it's so awful.

But they have added Victoria's secret to the e-store. To keep Trump happy perhaps?

I have long argued that for people without status there was no redeeming value in Aeroplan.

Just like, I stopped collecting air miles something like 13 years ago. smoke and mirrors really.

OTOH if you have status, these changes are more good than bad. Single scenario that's worse is if you want to change within 22 days *and* you need to change both ways.

For diamond members - if it's 22 days before departure, then I can just cancel for $30 and then rebook? So in that case the fee has gone from $90 to $30?

After that the change (if in both directions) has gone from $90 to $150 for diamond members. Would have been a lot more palatable if it was $50 in each direction.

I wonder how much input AC has on this since it effectively makes their frequent flyer program less attractive - assuming they don't get any of this new revenue, and only Aeroplan does.

I can't recall the last time I had to change both directions at once.

Typically, I book something, and then as better flights open up, I change. So this will save me $15 CAD per call, if I understand correctly.

And cancellations dropping from $90 to $30 is great!

22 days out yes. From Aeroplan's perspective, this reduces call center load as you can cancel and rebook both online.

After that it becomes pretty expensive ...

Well, unless you're booked YOW-YYZ-ORD-IAH-NRT, and want to rebook it to YOW-YYZ-ORD-NRT, in which case, by cancelling, you risk losing YOW-YYZ-ORD when all you really want is the newly available ORD-NRT.

I'd agree that FF programs are on the downward value slope, particularly for the less than very frequent, frequent-flyer. I think all the legacy carriers, including AC, are starting to view these programs as way too costly as they were originally unveiled and will increasingly analyze the cost-benefit ratio with respect to the loyalty payoff to the bottom-line AND/OR monetize the points program so that revenue to the program from 3rd-parties (credit-cards, etc) and internal fees turns it the FF program into a profit-centre.

Alaska is somewhat unique as they have a relatively long history but a regional focus with multiple partners but not an alliance member. This differentiates them from the US legacies and perhaps causes them to look at customer loyalty from a broader perspective. They haven't yet followed their larger partner AA down the devaluation path but I'd expect there will be some changes as they roll-out their own version of premium economy.
