I had cancel a flight 1 way MUC-YYZ for my wife. So now come past Dec.6th it seemed like I can cancel this once and for all and get my points back. Had an emergency that we had come home Milan.

I think the reality is that the vast majority will not even know the difference....or care until they need to fork out $$$. Heard the same complaints with YQ, yet people are still paying it.

We will get people complaining here in a year about the costs of cancelling/changes and it will be rehashed time and time again.

I know many SEs that have no real concept of the Altitude program and only find out months later that there have been changes. I imagine it is only amplified for Aeroplan members.

Unfortunately, while Amex MR points can be transferred to Aeroplan, they don't count towards diamond status. However, points earned on a TD Aeroplan Visa do count.

One does wonder if this is simply a way to try and drive spend to the partner CCs.

That's the problem. I imagine many people start accumulating Aeropeso points after getting carried away by the advertising that promises "free flights", "any seat, anytime", but when the times comes for Aeroplan to fullfill their part of the deal, the customers encounter :
  • High fuel/scam surcharges
  • Poor availabilities due to capacity controls
  • "any seat, any time" awards require multiples of the number of miles advertised in the credit card signup offers
  • Long phone wait times to reach Aeroplan customer service
  • Other unreasonable fees such as change/cancellation fees

Well, data point for you: I realize I'm just one person, but I'm someone who has switched to competitors largely because of Aeroplan and Air Canada's long wait times, poor service, high scam charges and fees, and other various "enhancements" that have devalued it enough to drive me away.

I suspect lots of people in my tier are in a similar boat. We may not be as frequent flyers as you guys, but we still spend significant amounts of our disposable time and income on travel... and now we're spending it with AC's competition.

Time will tell if Aeroplan and AC see a negative business impact from all of this.

I often book my reward tickets at two one-way flights, booking the outbound when availability is first released, and the return later. With only a $30 cancellation fee, it makes it easier to book a few different outbound options on successive dates, increasing the odds that return seats will come available for the desired trip length, and then cancel the outbound options not needed.
Unless you want to cancel your placeholder one-ways within 22 days, or because something better opened up, then it becomes $119 for a one way ticket, even for SEs

Change fees used to be $75 and cancel fees were $150 (I think). Then AE decided to go to a uniform $90 for changes and cancellations (I assumed they had way more changes than cancellations). Now they've decided to charge different amounts again.

Next up, $125 for changes/cancellations?

And I was annoyed when UA implemented a charge for changes/cancellation on Star Alliance partner tickets less than 24 hrs before departure!

I use Alaska Air for a lot of leisure travel and they put Aeroplan and most other FF programs to shame with respect to refund/cancel policies (and IT):

For an award on Alaska:
- more than 60 days from departure full refund of points, taxes, fees or change for FREE
- within 60 days from departure for a $125 per PERSON (no matter how simple or complex that particular booking)

For an award not on Alaska you just lose the $25/person/round-trip partner booking fee.

For non-refundable revenue ticket on Alaska similar, but the amount goes into "My Wallet" where you can also deposit Alaska gift cards, which are FAR less restrictive than AC.

And you can almost always do all of this on-line.

Alaska is such a better program. Unfortunately with everything else happening with the competition, I see devals in the future. Not as bad as the Emirates.. but enhancements are on the way.

OMG.. PER DIRECTION.......who does that? why not $50 per direction then?

Too many Aeroplan miles to ditch it @@
Have to re-think my mRTW booking strategy going forward = never changing what I booked, unless schedule/involuntary change/waiver (I got one due to IST bombing this summer)

Buy AIMIA stocks then?

Jerry, you're hilarious.

I was pretty sure one of the topics you and I and the others covered at last summer's YYZ micro-do was "Earn 'Em and Burn 'Em"
