A330-300 Fleet Overview

AC currently has two configurations of 333:
  • Dream Cabin (16 aircraft): Latest 3-class configuration in line with the 787 and 777 fleets (seat map)
  • The "Merlions" (2 aircraft): ex-Singapore Airlines 2-class configuration (seat map), which are expected to be reconfigured to the Dream Cabin.
    • Important note: the front cabin on these aircraft is an angle-flat product in a 2-2-2 layout that was SQ's "regional" business class. On flights within North America, AC sells it as J; on international flights, they sell it as PY. These aircraft do not have the standard AC PY cabin
    • Since October 2023, these aircraft primarily operate YYZ>BOG>YUL triangle, and YUL<>LAX.

Sorry, for some reason my brain jumped to the conclusion that the ex-SQ 330s would be operating as rouge since the first route known for them was YUL-ALG, a Rouge route, but I realize now that doesn't make any sense.

Lucky says they were acquired by TP in 2017.

The aircraft are all ~10 years old, all delivered to SQ in 2009, hardly junk. TP only had them for a year as temporary lift pending their A330neo deliveries.

The incoming A330s also have a slightly higher MTOW = increased range.

I wonder why AC does not use its options from more 787 planes?

"DID NOT"

It was discussed in the other threads and many (not just on FT) think it was a mistake. No matter......

They deemed it to be the best use of capital. The A330 ownership costs are lower then 787s, so it was the best decision for them at the time.

They will need to replace the A330 fleet at some point. It's unclear if that will be with 787/777 or not.

May not only have been csapital costs. It would seem that for the relatively limited range needed for Eastern NA to most of Europe, longer legs are not needed and these planes are more economical. The business of having heavier planes as to carry more fuel. Engine a bigger empty weight, bigger wings, bigger engines etc.

For very long range, fuel load is by far the largest component of the load early in the flight. I did not do the math but I suspect early on there is an exponential relationship somewhere.

Does anyone have any insight on the Y configuration of the 330 fleet, post-reconfiguration? I'm hoping that they will keep the respectable 2-4-2 config over the 3-3-3 that Air Transat and other LCCs use but after the 777 HD seating fiasco, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to see a HD 333-- at least in Y.

The wiki post-refurb seatmap shows 2-4-2:

This is the current config with PE added and old J/Y seats- I was wondering about when these aircraft receive the new J/Y seats in late 2019.

Yes, my apologies. I copy and pasted in a hurry and forgot that this thread was originally about the PY refurb only.

Wiki significantly updated

@marke190

You've spurred me on to do a significant update to the wiki.

This thread can now be considered as the master thread for the full 330 refurb effort, and not just PY.

I've included all summary information regarding the SQ->TP->AC birds as well.

All: Any updates or correction to information in the wiki can be managed by me for the time being. Just post your information/requests as a post and I will follow up with wiki edits. Please and thank you.
