A330-300 Fleet Overview

AC currently has two configurations of 333:
  • Dream Cabin (16 aircraft): Latest 3-class configuration in line with the 787 and 777 fleets (seat map)
  • The "Merlions" (2 aircraft): ex-Singapore Airlines 2-class configuration (seat map), which are expected to be reconfigured to the Dream Cabin.
    • Important note: the front cabin on these aircraft is an angle-flat product in a 2-2-2 layout that was SQ's "regional" business class. On flights within North America, AC sells it as J; on international flights, they sell it as PY. These aircraft do not have the standard AC PY cabin
    • Since October 2023, these aircraft primarily operate YYZ>BOG>YUL triangle, and YUL<>LAX.

Does anyone know why AC has fallen in love again with the A330?

i know they say it sits well between the narrow body fleet and the Boeing wide bodies, and suits a certain long haul market (not sure what that is).

I do know that a previous COO (or something similar) kept his flying hours in on the A330 and so it effectively had an exec sponsor. But given AC's love for the dream liners and 777's I am curious on a fleet you'd expect to get retired to reduce the number of types in the fleet gets a boast with 4/5 more aircraft.
I like the A330 and flown it a lot in the UK and europe.

Just curious

You wrote it yourself. The A333's fuel consumption comes quite close to the 789 on shorter routes. By that I mean TATL routes from YYZ and YUL to western Europe. Yes, the 789 is still slightly better on fuel, but but when you take CAPEX into account, the picture changes and the used A333 looks very good. AC still has and will have for some time quite wide pool of Airbus pilots, so flight deck crew training expenses are probably negligible. That's why AC is adding used A330's. Brand new A330's wouldn't make any sense.

AC seem to love old used planes that are cheap! Clearly these 330s meet that standard.

Yeah, just like all those 777s and 787s they bought in the last few years. And the 737 MAX that are being delivered right now. And the C-Series that will come after that.

I think it is the case that AC likes aircraft that have lower cost of ownership and are when it comes to wide body aircraft there are a lot of route they operate on where a smaller wide-body makes sense. The 767 and now the 330 are good first for a number of their European routes.

Why would you expect it to be retired? The planes have a lot of life left in them.

What are you talking about? In the last 5-10 years, AC has bought a few used 763s and a handful of second-hand 32xs, but they've also bought the 787s, a few new 777s, a lot of 737s, the CSeries, plus new CR9s... I'd say probably 80-90% of what AC has added to the fleet in recent years (including those on order) is brand new.

Actually, the A330-300 isn't exactly a small aircraft. In AC's current configuration it seats only 6 pax less than the 787-9 (and 41 pax more compared to the 787-8). The new config remains to be seen.

Any ideas on what the new A330 seats will look like? Hopefully they are bladder-less!

Thanks!.. Flying on Friday from YYZ-ZHR (AC 878) and they are not selling PE or seems like PE is not being offered. Is this possible?

There seems to be a couple of seats left on Thursday's flight but yes, nothing on Friday. Sold out perhaps? Or maybe they'll swap your bird out to a 7M8.

They're being re-configured to the 777/787 standard.
