Seeing how this thread/wiki is now somewhat "outdated" in that the PY config has been completed for awhile, I figured it would be a good time to give it a refresh and make it an overall refurb thread, with plans for completion by mid-2020.

For the time being and consistency of formatting and information, please update any new information in a post and I (yyznomad) will update the wiki accordingly. Please and thank you!
  • Others may leverage this thread as the 333 refurb master thread for all cabins, including the four SQ birds from TP ("The Lions")
  • There have been anecdotal mentions of the SQ birds in recent threads, but the original mention was in this thread, posted by ChrisA330 in post 268
  • Tangible and sustained discussion surrounding a full refurb begins roughly in earnest at post 264: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-...ration-18.html
  • Of course, discussion remains open to any cabin, including the now completed PY cabin of the existing A330-300s in the fleet.
Quick Summary on the SQ "Lions"
  • Acquired by TP from SQ in 2017; to be acquired by AC prior to mid-2019.
  • Current TP registrations: 1. CS-TOU; 2. CS-TOV; 3. CS-TOW; 4. CS-TOX
  • Future AC registrations/FINs: C-GEFA 939; C-GEGC 940; C-GEGI 941; C-GEGP 942
  • Will have original SQ configuration and interiors (not TP) before being refurbished by AC
  • Front cabin was sold as SQ Z/TP C but will be sold as AC O ("PY") [O30/Y255]
  • Flights with these aircraft are currently being sold by AC starting June 2019.
  • Front cabin seat details: Pitch=60"; Width=24.5"
  • Front cabin config: 5 rows of 2-2-2

There are now flying with TP, but originally from SQ. When the new Fins are introduced they will not be reconfigured to AC's standards, so the original SQ regional business class seat will still exist until the end of 2019. These will instead be sold as PE, and not J.

It appears from airfleets.net, these are original 2009-build SQ aircraft and currently 4 odd-ball A330-343X models flying for TP within their mainstay A330-200 fleet.
Current registration models: CS-TOU/TOV/TOW/TOX. They will be delivered in their current C30/Y255 configuration until refurbished in late 2019 with AC.

Great seating with PY pricing.

Anecdotal/related threads started after ChrisA330's original SQ/TP post above:

Thanks to 24left for pictures of the regional SQ A330-343 Z cabin, to be sold as AC O (PY):

And SQ seats don't deflate.

Does anyone know why AC has fallen in love again with the A330?

i know they say it sits well between the narrow body fleet and the Boeing wide bodies, and suits a certain long haul market (not sure what that is).

I do know that a previous COO (or something similar) kept his flying hours in on the A330 and so it effectively had an exec sponsor. But given AC's love for the dream liners and 777's I am curious on a fleet you'd expect to get retired to reduce the number of types in the fleet gets a boast with 4/5 more aircraft.
I like the A330 and flown it a lot in the UK and europe.

Just curious

You wrote it yourself. The A333's fuel consumption comes quite close to the 789 on shorter routes. By that I mean TATL routes from YYZ and YUL to western Europe. Yes, the 789 is still slightly better on fuel, but but when you take CAPEX into account, the picture changes and the used A333 looks very good. AC still has and will have for some time quite wide pool of Airbus pilots, so flight deck crew training expenses are probably negligible. That's why AC is adding used A330's. Brand new A330's wouldn't make any sense.

AC seem to love old used planes that are cheap! Clearly these 330s meet that standard.

Yeah, just like all those 777s and 787s they bought in the last few years. And the 737 MAX that are being delivered right now. And the C-Series that will come after that.

I think it is the case that AC likes aircraft that have lower cost of ownership and are when it comes to wide body aircraft there are a lot of route they operate on where a smaller wide-body makes sense. The 767 and now the 330 are good first for a number of their European routes.

Why would you expect it to be retired? The planes have a lot of life left in them.

What are you talking about? In the last 5-10 years, AC has bought a few used 763s and a handful of second-hand 32xs, but they've also bought the 787s, a few new 777s, a lot of 737s, the CSeries, plus new CR9s... I'd say probably 80-90% of what AC has added to the fleet in recent years (including those on order) is brand new.

Actually, the A330-300 isn't exactly a small aircraft. In AC's current configuration it seats only 6 pax less than the 787-9 (and 41 pax more compared to the 787-8). The new config remains to be seen.

Any ideas on what the new A330 seats will look like? Hopefully they are bladder-less!

Thanks!.. Flying on Friday from YYZ-ZHR (AC 878) and they are not selling PE or seems like PE is not being offered. Is this possible?

There seems to be a couple of seats left on Thursday's flight but yes, nothing on Friday. Sold out perhaps? Or maybe they'll swap your bird out to a 7M8.

They're being re-configured to the 777/787 standard.
