Connecting International-US at YUL?
It appears that the normal way is to bypass Candian immigration and go directly to US immigration.
However my question is, if luggage is checked through, can the passenger still go through Canadian immigration, and then through US immigration together with YUL departing passengers?
Reason being as follows: we are traveling together up to YUL but then we split, she goes to the US and I fly home. We may have stuff that's more than my quota but less than both hers and mine.

Don't Canada->US flights require PPBM? I feel like bags tagged under your name won't go through customs until you see an agent, so if you don't see an agent, they'll never leave YUL.

If your flight originated outside Canada or the United States and you need to take a connecting flight to a U.S. destination, there are two possible options:
If your airline offers the option of automatically transferring your luggage and you have a boarding pass for your connecting flight, you will be asked to proceed via a connecting flights corridor, avoiding Canadian customs. You will, however, have to go through U.S. customs. Your checked luggage will be transferred automatically by the luggage-handling system. Note, however, that U.S. customs officers are authorized to recall your luggage, if necessary, for manual inspection. If the customs officers do not yet have the information on your luggage at hand, you will be asked to proceed to the waiting area.
But my question had to do with automatic luggage transfer *AND* going though Canadian immigration rather than direct to US immigration.

Ahh, I see. I misread your OP. I thought you and your companion were flying XXX-YUL-US and you wanted to get off at YUL while getting your bags to go to the US. Unfortunately, I can't provide any insight except to say that I'd imagine that the same procedures that would apply to a CA-YUL-US connection should also apply to you.

We did this connection a few years ago. We went directly from our flight to security and US passport control. It took us quite a while and was very crowded. I don't know how normal that is.....We now have a choice of two flights to BOS from YUL after arriving from Bordeaux at 12:20pm, either a 2:05 or a 4:00pm flight....all on Air Canada with United miles. Obviously, 4pm is safe. What about the earlier connection. flights are Friday, July 12.
