I figured out why the required spending req

There's an AC flight from NYC to Toronto.

If buying from AC (and hence qualifying for spend req), it's $129 USD.
If buying from UA (despite it being an AC flight), it's $96 USD.

Someone trying to hit the spend requirement might buy from AC (and hence pay $33 more).

Note: Does this qualify for AC's price guarantee?

"The lower price is displayed and sold in Canadian (CAD) dollars."

and

"Your travel originates in Canada."

I'm guessing not. If you go into the fine details, they've possibly got you on:

"The original price is for a one-way or round-trip itinerary originating in Canada to any Air Canada destination." (i.e., if you're flying to YYZ from NYC either as a one-way or a round-trip, you're likely SOL)

and definitely on:

"The lower price is not an advertised price by another airline."

Also: "The lower price is displayed and sold in Canadian (CAD) dollars."

Edit: 24L obviously beat me to the punch...

How does this work tho? AC flight is cheaper when sold by UA than by AC.

@ haolaowai_org

Not sure what you mean. Here is what I see.

Can you explain where exactly you got your USD and CAD rates. Thanks

24left, isn't it the difference at the bottom, in the "book with..." section? The place that also hints at an explanation for the difference, in that there are UA flight numbers and then "marketed as..." for the AC numbers.

I had asked OP:

They did not reply so I just put any dates into Google Flights. The problem is, the prices are all over the place as there are multiple daily flights.

EDIT: OK, So I re-entered Feb 10-17. Results for both AC and UA are identical flight times

Below is the UA trip summary screen shot with Fare, Taxes, Total - USD

Below that is the AC screen shot

The taxes and fees are almost identical, the base fares are not and maybe others can determine if the difference is because the the AC fares class on the outbound is Tango S versus L on the return, whereas UA base fares are lower.

Funny thing, the AC flights are operated by UA.

Now with this info, perhaps you can figure it out. Thanks.

Is that the answer OP was looking for, to explain why AC charges more for the same flights?

Codeshare inventory is not the same as "real" inventory.

The answer is "go read about codeshares".

Of course if you were crediting to AP you would get half the miles, if Crediting to UA you would get 500 min with status and 100% of the points.

Are UA miles worth the same as AC miles? If so, I'll make a UA account now

Somewhat unrelated question... where should I credit my miles when I fly?

You'll get different answers from different people
