This change annoys me even further with the people's airline.

What if I book a non refundable ticket with a certain return date that is not at the latest possible date for that ticket;then my plans change at the last minute but I'm not sure about my return date;if I don't change the date ahead of the flt.I lose the ticket. If I change it and find my timing is off again I would have to pay yet another $145 plus GST to change the date again. So, on a $600 ticket I could end up paying another $300 to effect a change in the return. That would be a 100% penalty on the return portion.
And Empress wonders why we get p****d off at the blundering idots who run this airline.

Ahhh....thats to force you in the higher far tickets.

It seems the airlines in North America are in a rather desperate situation. I have been away for a month and a lot of things have happened...for the worse. This move along with the recent announcements by U.S. Airways and UAL are all desperate actions aiming at raising liquidity or short-term cash flows, something AC has been doing over the last year with cuts to Aeroplan benefits and the addition of several fees.

These actions, during prosper time, would be easily recognized as non-viable marketing strategies by the airlines are now used despite obvious negative consequences. All those actions are only going to give frequent travellers more incentives not to fly at all when flying become so complicated and unpleasant or literaly frustrating. A fee here and there is very frustrating. Sure it raises cash but how many times is this going to work? For the first time, when a traveller is left without choices but having to pay the change fee, then he/she would most likely say to himself that: "I won't let this thing happen again next time." Travellers will adapt and become smarter about it - as Ken said: become more creative or simply stop flying.

I'll compare these actions to deflation in the economy. It's going to create a negative spiral that would result in less and less people wanting to travel by air or avoid it as much as possible - basically the airlines made their own coffins. This is not very smart by any means. What this will lead I think, is totally new era of air travelling in North America in which fewer full-service airlines will exist (many will go out of business) but many small discounters within the next 3 years. Would AC be one of the surviving one? Frankly, I can't be certain - maybe they have to be resuced by Ottawa like Air New Zealand by their national government.

It occurs to me that in some cases a replacement ticket on WestJet might be less than the AC change fee.

Actually Ferrari, in BC there are no anti-scalping laws, so you can sell that hockey ticket for whatever you can get....but with the Canucks that generally isn't too much.

Didn't take them long to update the fare rules:

Code:

AFTER EACH TICKETED DEPARTURE DATE 1.NO CHANGES PERMITTED 2.TICKET HAS NO VALUE 3.NO STANDBY PERMITTED

Hi, Ferrari, No, I'm not working graveyards this week. I'm in the office Monday to Friday 830-1630est. I believe Gazou is working but not the graveyard shift.
Send me an email, and i'll see what i can do. (I know your favors are always kosher, so I'm sure i'll be able to help! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif )

Do I understand correctly? Most AC tickets are non-refundable. If I have a non-refeundable ticket that permits same day satndby travel, I can no longer call and cancel the reservation before the flight and then show up at the airport to standby for a later flight unless I pay a change fee?

BlondeBomber Sep 7, 2002 7:48 am

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more standby on H or V class tickets?????????????????

What the hell is the value of a V class ticket now?

BlondeBomber Sep 7, 2002 7:49 am

How does this intersect with new Flex Jazz fares which allow standby? There will be a lot of confused agents, angry passengers . . .

Just when I thought AC was growing up again http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

FlyerGoldII Sep 7, 2002 8:16 am

I am confused. Do the new rules state that one can standby for fares such as H or V, for flights leaving earlier than the one that the passenger is ticketed for, but no longer can he/she standby for a flight later than he/she is ticketed for, unless the ticket is changed to the later flight, associated with the change fee - and this change occurs before the original flight has departed?

this year we'll do it......maybe!...

BlondeBomber Sep 7, 2002 9:12 am

FGII - NO (I repeat NO) standby on ANY discounted fare in North America.

You pay the $50 or $145 or whatever change fee per change.

I don't know how this intersects with the new Jazz E fares that have flexibility but I predict majorly POd pax.

BlondeBomber Sep 7, 2002 9:22 am

Just on the phone to AC and they said Jazz Flex are still OK

They said STANDBY IS PERMITTED on H and V still (despite the NO STANDBY PERMITTED in the fare rules on Travelocity and Expedia).

I let them know in no uncertain terms that MASS confusion will reign. If the gate agents don't even know what is what and I have to educate them, how the hell will other passengers be treated.

I urge each and everyone of you to write a letter to AC (if you still care about flying in Canada on AC) AND to phone Air Canada within the next couple of days. They need to hear from us loud and clear!
