Hmm. Shouldn't be. HKG also caps their YQ pretty severely.

It's hard to find REAL values for trips like this. I tried to price mine out and ITA exploded. I priced them out 1 by 1 and it was like $30k+ which no one would ever pay.

But that's not why I'm posting!

Just in case you didn't know, keep your eyes peeled for PEK-YUL-HAV, I'm sure it'd be nicer to get that direct flight if possible. If you have EF you can set up that alert, works like a charm, just fixed my AS award yesterday after I got an alert .

If I catch your drift, you mean to say that PEK-YUL may not show up as available, but searching for PEK-HAV or SHA-PEK, may give results for PEK-YUL-HAV or SHA-PEK-YUL, so then you can call in and get an agent to find the PEK-YUL segment to make the swap for $100 change fee?

I have never gotten HKG to work when it's only a stop over

Only when it's the point of turnaround do I really cut the YQ

Yup. Sorry, was writing on the go so wasn't too detailed. SHA-YUL might pull up the direct AC flight or the connection via PEK. Very often the direct PEK-xxx flights on CA do not come up - I've previously been unable to book PEK-SVO direct, but looking up PEK-ARN came up with PEK-SVO-ARN, and then I had the agent direct book it. So when you search try searching for connections.

Oh see all I meant was "Hey don't forget there's a new PEK-YUL flight" so he/she might be able to skip that pesky Newark leg. That's all I meant I haven't had that issue with CA flights not showing, but then I also use Expertflyer for most of my searching.

Just booked a family mini-rtw for next August (kids will be 14 and 16), I wish I had booked this as soon as it became available because I ended up with a couple of undesired connections: VIE and LAX. Also we could no longer find direct flights from China to Montreal or Toronto (with 4 J anyway).
Trip of a lifetime. We'll add local flights in Thailand (PHK probably) and China (XIY).

YQB YUL
YUL ZRH Swiss J
ZRH VIE Austrian J
VIE ATH Austrian J - Stop 8 days in Greece
ATH CAI Egyptair - 8 hr layover - pyramids probably
CAI BKK Egyptair J - Destination 5 days in Thailand
BKK PEK Air China J - Stop 10 days in China
PEK LAX Air China J
LAX YYZ Air Canada J
YYZ YQB

Per person - about $270 taxes plus 30$.

Agent tells me I was less than 100 miles under the limit for MPM on this one. All J, except the YVR-YYZ leg.

Wanted to move the HND-YVR-YYZ leg over to the NRT-YYZ direct, but apparently this involves $450 in *additional* YQ.

YUL-ZRH - Swiss 333
(daytime in Zurich)
ZRH-HKG - Swiss 773
(5 days in Hong Kong)
HKG-ICN - Asiana 333
ICN-SYD - Asiana 380
(7 days in Sydney)
SYD-AKL - Air New Zealand 772
AKL-NRT - Air New Zealand 789
(3 days in Tokyo)
HND-YVR - ANA 788
(overnight in Vancouver)
YVR-YYZ - AC 788
YYZ-YOW - AC 763
YOW-YUL - AC CR7

Total YQ was about $600, which is more than I'd like, but booking this late in the game I was pretty limited as far as flights on decent airlines for the dates I needed to fly.

That's a pretty awesome itinerary. What was the total AE mile cost? Thanks!

As above, all J except YVR-YYZ, which I'll try for if it's J1 on the day.

160,000 miles, cost of a business award to Australia.

Be Warned that the HND-YVR ANA flight is NOT a lie-flat right now. I was just on it and it was TERRIBLE angle flat beds. See ANA forum for more info.

I know, I'm bummed, but it's also several hundred dollars of YQ, and several hundred of hotels, cheaper than the AC flight three days later. I've got EF alerts set for NH availability through ORD and NYC, but I can live with 8 hours in what is essentially decent Premium Economy.
