AC Delayed/Cancelled Flight Compensation Threads
There are several threads on compensation for delayed/cancelled flights operated by AC.
If your question is about claiming compensation under EU rules (a.k.a. EU261 or EC261), this is the correct thread.
For information on which regime(s) you're eligible for compensation under, or which would be more favourable, please see: Air Canada Compensation For Delayed/Cancelled Flights
For information regarding APPR (Canadian regulations), please see: Claiming compensation from AC under APPR (Air Passenger Protection Regulations)

AC 873 (FRA-YYZ) was delayed, on arrival, three hours and 42 minutes yesterday. I originally assumed that I didn't meet the four hour threshold for the 600 Euro compensation, but on reviewing the AC "Long Delay and Flight Cancellation Notice" (which, incidentally, was not handed out to passengers), I think that I probably am--or at the very least half that amount. The wording of the AC document is ambiguous and occasionally contradictory, so I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into a situation like this? Thanks in advance.....

EU261 compensation; normal for Air Canada to ask for bank details via email?
ive just been awarded compensation under EU261. Is it normal practice for Air Canada to ask for bank details via email. Email looks as though it has come from Customer Care Thanks

Asking for bank details for EC261/2004 is normal, I've personally not want to give it over (non-SSL) email. Other companies ask for the details via secure web (HTTPS) when submitting the claim.
I believe you can also request a cheque. I have no idea how the 'forms' they provide deal with the fact than EU and NA bank systems have different requirements for incoming funds.

Very common, but AC is late to this process, IMO.
Both A3 and TK wired me fund for reimbursement within 3 days after bank details were provided.

I would never send personal financial information over email, laughable and clueless if that is the only way AC does it.
As stated above, most companies usually send you to some SSL encrypted messaging portal where your data is much more secure.

If you still use paper checks for any purpose, your bank details are printed on the face of that paper. I would worry a lot less about providing those details via email to a going concern than handing out pieces of paper, e.g. checks, to others.
On the other hand, if this remotely troubles you, just ask for a check. It will take longer and you should make certain that it is payable in GBP.

I will not give banking details online to anyone including my bank. From my perspective, anyone that does, is just asking for trouble.
I would phone Air Canada and give them my details that way. I don't see any reason why you couldn't do that. Use Skype or whatever to make a free or nearly free call to Air Canada Customer Service and take it from there.
That something is standard practice for a company does not mean it is the best practice for you to agree to comply with.

I have given void cheques to many before, best way of setting up direct debits for monthly rent, property tax, hydro etc... Anything I can't stick onto a credit card for points. But this is normally done in person or over a secured webpage.
In the past, I've also given people my UK bank details to transfer money to me but am very wary about doing this over email. It can be dangerous for sure: https://www.theguardian.com/money/20....scamsandfraud
I would ask them to call you, or call them. Or see if they'll do a cheque. I've done this a few times with companies without secure pay that wanted other details (including my credit card) over email.
I have no idea what currency the cheque would be in, but be aware that in addition to taking longer it may be a bad exchange rate, and the bank putting it into may also give you a bad rate and, at least here in Canada putting in GBP cheques take 21 business days to clear. You'll see the money, but it won't appear as available for a month basically.

But with legitimate business should be no issue. My employer has my details for obvious reasons.
One could of course insert many jokes about AC as a legitimate business at this point. I still wouldn’t do it over email especially given the state of their IT. Please phone me on xxx (home) yyy (cell) or zzz (office) to get my bank details should suffice. List the numbers in order of likelihood to be answered and only list ones with voicemail.
