The only difference between HD and "regular" 777's is the ratio of J vs. Y seats. If you book Y on an "almost HD" aircraft, you are getting the same sardine can seating as on the HD. Only practical difference on HD is slightly faster exit from Y if near the front and slightly longer if in the back.

The old 777HD Y seats and the new 787-style 777 Y seats are physically the same seat I believe; they just had to change the upholstery to refurbish it. The PY seats are different physically, so they'd have to remove them, but I think they ought to replace them sometime in the future for consistency.
The important bit for me is that my butt can no longer tell the difference between the Y and PY products across different aircraft. If you care about the entertainment system, then there is still a big difference between the five original HDs and the rest of the 777/787 fleet.

Further update. I found myself once again on one of the original 5 flying abominations, and lo and behold the PY cabin has been re-upholstered to match the new style. The entertainment system is still the old version (low resolution with vertical interlacing), and the seat shells are the old ones (cream colored sides with tan armrest, rather than newer dark grey ones), but the hard-leather padding is gone, replaced by the blueish 787/newer 777 style. MUCH more comfortable. Once again I didn't check Y, but since they didn't bother to change the seat shells or the entertainment system for PY, I doubt they would have done it for Y.

How is AC's Business Class for YVR-SYD on 777-200?
Hello
Working on a Plan B for my YUL to SYD journey (ANA unfortunately doesn't look like will open up).
Has anyone tried recently the business class for Vancouver to Sydney? Is it a new configuration? I didn't find any business class reviews for this aircraft on SeatGuru. I recently did a Toronto to Seoul leg on AC's new 787 and loved it. Wondering if the 777-200 is the same updated seating or an old model?
Thanks!

Hi there.
As for seat and configuration, I would recommend you visit the Air Canada Fleet page and look at the actual source. SeatGuru may do its best, but it is known to have inaccuracies.

EDITED TO ADD:
This thread and especially the wiki at the top will tell you that all of AC's 777 versions have been refurbished

Just did the YVR-SYD run a few weeks ago in J. Yes, updated reverse herringbone format. Same as any other International J flight other than longer and more $$$. Same J config as 787. Still has the super annoying table that hampers your ability to turn or sleep on your side. I can't count how many times I've wacked my knees on this configuration. Great thing is that it departs YVR at midnight which is a natural time for sleeping making the flight quite effortless considering the 15+ hour flight time. I actually filmed a review of this trip but haven't had the time to edit it yet. When you do arrive in SYD, before deplaning, they crew will need to open all storage bins and fumigate the plane before anyone can get off.

What is interesting though, if you take a flight on BA into SYD, they spray prior to arrival. Saves at least 10 minutes if you are on a short connection.
Would be nice to see AC doing this (if it were an option )

If possible I would suggest taking one seat in front of the other one. One person lean forward, another person look back, and you two can talk freely without getting out of seats. The problem for middle seat is the divider can not be lowered. And if you need to reach your wife's seat, it envolves going through the galley. For across the aisle, the seats are staggered.

I would have thought side by side across the aisle on AC would be better than one behind the other.
