Any seat recommendations in J for the refurbished 77Ws for a solo traveler?

Thx to all for responses. Seems as if like most things AC these days you pay your money and take your chances. Not the best way....

Since they don't charge more for the new configuration you cannot really say that. It's all the same product and obviously they cannot guarantee which you'll get.

In other words, they sell the old one and if you get lucky you'll get a new one for the same price.

Plus, the difference is not that big anyway.

Flew in one of the new 773 HDs this week from YVR-YYZ in Y - was completely unimpressed except for the IFE - which is a huge improvement.

Boarding was super slow since there were 450 pax - even with 4 gate agents. It didn't help that YVR was experiencing computer problems at the time. I'm curious how fast it would have been otherwise.

It was a full flight, and you could really notice the narrower seat, and when you recline the seat pan moves out and pushes your knees into the seat in front (at least for me at 6'2").

I was in row 19 (2nd row of Y) and they ran out of hot meals by the time they reached me.

Pax were constantly inadvertently setting off the FA call buttons located in the armrest. Most of the time the crew didn't even bother to respond.

Lavs are much tighter - about what you'd see on a Q400 or CRJ, but perfectly serviceable. I liked the touch-free faucets. Never too much of a wait, though I can imagine on a long flight it could be tough.

I guess bottom line is I can't imagine being on this AC in Y on a TPAC flight. I would definitely spring for premium economy or J.

On the plus side, I think I'd still pick this bird over the A320s on this route - at least it's easier to move around the cabin and it does feel roomier overall.

See, the AC strategy worked. Make things miserable enough in the Y cabin on the 450 pax steam ship and some will pay more just to sit in a better seat.

Semi-Humour aside, I found it miserable in the studio pods on that thing. As I wrote last year, whoever designed those seats and cabin should be taken out back.....

We all know they will be replaced but not much will change for Y. While FFs and FTers have a better understanding of aircraft and may be lucky enough to have choices on some routes, the average pax does not and it's all about price.

The refurbs are clearly an improvement and I've flown on a couple of the 77Ls including one recent AC 15. Perhaps AC can "refurb" some of the other onboard experiences.

Just flew the refurbished 777 back from CDG - one thing I hadn't read before (though it is probably buried in the thread somewhere) was that the refurb included installation of an espresso machine as with the 787. Nice surprise!

738 is scheduled to come out of refurb tomorrow (March 16). That means the turnaround is down to 32 days now.

Among the refurbs, I have only flown fin 742 in Y. But I can say that, in Y, things are way worse than before refurbishing. This was YYZ-SCL-EZE, back in January. For the return I got 705, still not refurbished back then, and my mood improved significantly when I learned I was flying the non-refurb.

Onboard 740 right now and indeed, I can confirm others' reports of J being more cramped than on the Dreamliner. Definitely not something to complain about, but it's still noticeable.

I'm just going off of memory, but isn't the 773 wider than the 788? What about it makes it cramper? Vertical or horizontal? I have flown on the refurb J on a 773 and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary? I dunno, perception and all

It's hard to describe, but it feels like the pods are at more of an angle and closer to each other. Make sense?

Much wider ^

B/E Aerospace's website sucks, so I can't find a LOPA to prove my guesses but I would imagine it has to do with how the seats are angled - I seem to recall that Virgin Australia had to angle the Super Diamond seat more for the 330 so something may have happened on the 777 vs. 787 that required some sort of change... Given that the 777 is much wider, maybe there is a less of an angle and that impeeds on the footspace?

EDIT: Just saw ffsim's comment - it might be that Air Canada had to reduce pitch to fit the 7th row in... not sure though.

EDIT 2: Comparing AC's layout to China Airlines, AC fits an extra row in zone 1 with the same seat. While lavs/galley may play into that it definitely seems like AC's seats have less pitch than China Airlines.

Yeah, I think Orcair nailed it. To be clear, the pods aren't any smaller than on the Dreamliner (at least they don't feel smaller) but they seem to be angled more steeply.

Either that or it's the Crown talking

I am heading to Beijing next weekend (Sat 19th) and would go via YVR or YYZ if I could figure out which route has the new pods on the 777. Does anyone know which planes run on these routes? I see the YYZ - PEK flight appears to have PE, so assume it is the new interior. HOWEVER, the YVR flight shows an odd seating config but no PE, so I assume tired old pods? I have found the odd seating layout on website sometimes means new interior. For those long flights it makes a difference- the PE seats are about equal to the old pods to me, so if I'm going to pay the premium for J (P actually), it's only for the good ones. Any advice appreciated - thanks
Hey Newguy62, I will travel from YYZ to PEK on that day as well...

While I was able to book PY, so I guess it has a high chance that it is the refub ones?

I agree with you the pods don't feel any smaller than on the Dreamliner!
