Use AC SWU on UA??

Here's the deal: I am going H class on a UA ticket YVR-ORD-AMS. The first leg is on AC metal; the second on UA metal.

1. As an AC Elite, do I have upgrade possibilities? An AC SWU that would upgrade me on boh legs would be ideal, of course, but is that possible?

2. If not, can I at least get an upgrade on the first leg, since that's AC metal?

3. In either case (or actually even if there are no upgrades), am I better off checking in at the AC counter or do I have to go to the UA check-in (and would that be better)?

Coming back is the reverse itinerary, which means starting on UA metal, so I'm guessing that there's no UG possible--is that correct?

Thanks for any help with this.

You can only upgrade the AC segment using AC SWU. It also depends on who ticketed your reservation. Is the YVR-ORD segment UA or AC flight number? UA H class is not equivalent to AC H class. If the YVR-ORD is booked under UA codeshare flight number, then the H class is not upgradeable.

Where to check in depends on who ticketed your reservation.

If you flight is overbooked, you have a pretty good chance of getting a comp upgrade as a Star Gold on UA.

Is the AC-operated portion of your itinerary ticketed under the AC flight number or the UA codeshare flight number?

Whoops, already covered... you're too quick, Empress!

Boy, you guys are quick. Since the ticket has UA flight numbers for all 4 legs, I guess I'll check in at UA (and hope to get comped as *G).
Thanks Empress and YYZC2.

Actually wait! Good news for you.

Assuming both your fare basis and fare class is 'H' on your UA ticket, you can in fact upgrade the YVR-ORD on a standby basis using your AC certs because it looks like UA H = AC H on YVR-AMS!

What's your fare basis?

I'm pretty sure both are H, but I can't be positive until I check at home tonight.
Yes, indeed, that would be good news.
Thanks again.

Fare basis is probably "HHX2MCE" or "HHW2MCE" if you're travelling soon which is equivalent to AC's "HHXAP" or "HHWAP". Now you've got to think of a way to convince the YVR agent that UA H = AC H in this case since you can't upgrade in advance.

Probably printing the fare listing page is the only way or even call the Elite desk and get them to put a note in there. I know the SE desk offered to do that for me once so it's possible.

Empress:

Are you saying that for AC elites flying on a UA ticket on AC metal it is possible to use AC upgrades?

Yes, but only at the gate.

I think it might also be possible to get a SuperElite concierge to assist prior to the gate if you are SE but have no direct experience.

On a standby basis, yes. Cannot be confirmed in advance. I have done this to SFO before with no real problem. As Empress has pointed out, the fare class is the key and the two letters dont always match. I tried to do it with a UA V class last year, no luck

It's easiest if that station is handled by UA since they're used to giving upgrades from any fare for their own elites.

Just in case anyone is interested Someone on ebay has 4 SE upgrades for auction. Starting bid is $270. Better move quick!

Still hoping an SE might be going from YVR-LHR on 4th August or back on 13th.

Does anyone know what the deal is on taking a V fare up to a H fare (assuming H space is available). I know there is no change fee going to a full Y, but can you do this with a H? I looked on expedia at fare rules, but couldnt see anything

Anyone ever tried finding a SE at the gate or check in? I have the feeling it would look rather dodgy!

As long as you still meet the advance purchase requirement (7 days on LHR flights) and H is available, then you can do it without the change fee. You can even change your outbound date by doing this.

I've actually tried upgrading people this way before. Usually we happen to be chatting just before boarding then I'll ask them what class they're flying in and I'll try to upgrade them as my companion. Too bad they are usually travelling in lower than H! I know an Elite friend who did this a couple of times (ask a SE at check-in to upg them) and succeeded. I would be glad to do it if somebody asked me.

It was a lot easier back in the old days when we could upgrade from any fare! An easy way to make good friends with that cute girl.
