Combining Points

Two questions:

1. I have a lot of Aeroplan points, also a number with US Airways. Since they are both Star Alliance, can I combine them on one trip?

2. If using my AP points to go to Australia from Canada, cna I have a several day stopover in New Zealand along the way?

Thanks much.

Yes, one stop in either direction (2 stops plus your point of return).

Example: YVR - AKL - SYD - YVR is valid and can be booked online.

Unfortunately no. You can transfer Aeroplan points to US Airways points though using points.com. If you temporarily move to the US while you are doing such a transfer you will get a better rate.

I am unsure about the stopover capabilities on US Airways redemptions but you won't be charged fuel surcharges if you book with them. Unless you are an SE who was planning on using IKK to get a seat you will find the same availability on both airlines.

With US you should be able to have one stop over, or an open jaw as long as you are transiting two zones, however many have reported breaking the rules due to call centre agents that get confused easily.
