The point is it doesn't matter. That's why AC's part of the Star Alliance:
Bringing you benefits to make your journey smoother and more relaxing. Extending our network to fly to new places where you’ll do business tomorrow. And creating ways to earn and redeem your miles

While I sympathize generally with the OP's displeasure with AC/AE, I find it hard to believe someone who flies this much and gets those SE emails was not aware of the minimum AC metal mileage requirement introduced two years ago. This measure has appeared at the top of the statement pages too, not overly hidden away.
Lesson learned. FF programs are like any other investment you have and you must continuously check the T&Cs and updates on a regular basis.
Suggest the OP contact UA about a status match or at least fast track elite and start earning STARGold in Mileage Plus. And not to rub it in but had OP done this when s/he started flying UA instead of AC last year, likelihood would have earned 1K and been upgraded on just about every flight without using any instruments/miles. Not to mention sitting in E+ instead of regular economy on all those flights!
