General WiFi Tidbits
  • WiFi is managed by "WiFi Onboard", formerly known as "Gogo"
  • If you have a pass from WiFi OnBoard for their entire fleet that will generally work
  • You can redeem Aeroplan points for various packages ranging from one hour to the entire flight and at different speeds
  • Only one device at a time can use the plan. Once you log in with another device with your WiFi Onboard or Aeroplan account the other device will drop
  • Rouge J customers are now getting a one-time WiFi Onboard code for free WiFi on the flight instead of getting an iPad

Detailed WiFi roll-out info compiled by FTers:

Planes with WiFi (confirmed by FTers):
  • GoGo 2Ku satellite-based system (fast, large coverage area, including over water - coverage map):
    • 223
    • 319 (rouge)
    • 320 (rouge)
    • 321 (rouge)
    • 333 (except 946 and 948)
    • 788
    • 789 (except 860)
    • 77L
    • 77W
  • Gogo ATG system (old, slow, only works over land in North America, and not very far north - coverage map)
    • CR9: 701-721, 780-784 (note: a recent report from a Jazz pilot suggests the system may be disabled on 780-784)
    • E75
    • 319 (mainline)
    • 320 (mainline)
    • 321 (mainline)

Remaining planes planned for WiFi that are still without WiFI or unknown:
  • CR9: 722-730 (note: a recent report from a Jazz pilot suggests the system may be disabled on 780-784)
  • 7M8: all (AC had an embarrassing escapade with a Thales system that was completely inadequate. As of March 2023, they appear to have given up on this system. What they plan to replace it with is uncertain)
  • 789: 860
  • 333: 946, 948

Planes with no plans to install WiFi:
  • DH4s
  • CRJs

Air Canada Status WiFi Benefit
  • The benefit lasts for 12 months from the date of activation, which is the first date you sign into Gogo on an AC flight using your Aeroplan account. Date of benefit selection is irrelevant. It must be activated by the end of the calendar year.
  • Benefit currently works on all aircraft with WiFi, except possibly rouge. Some rouge aircraft have reported having access to the Aeroplan sign in which was required for the Aeroplan benefit to work. It's unknown whether the benefit will be extended to those fleets in the future.
  • The benefit says you can have up to 5 users but that is five unique devices in a one month period and not simultaneous usage. You will need to log off one device to use another device on the same flight. GoGo will apparently block if it sees too many devices in a one month period to avoid credential sharing.
  • There are huge problems with the Aeroplan login for this benefit. There is a high likelihood that you will need to attempt to log in numerous times for it to work, and it may not work at all. Chatting with WiFi Onboard support should get you a one-time code for free WiFi for the flight.

General rule of thumb - if the plane has old seats and IFE, it also has old/bad wifi.

I highly suggest trying with a VPN. There's no guarantee it'll work, but I've gotten Youtube to work several times by simply enabling a VPN - even on A319s with the basic wifi package.

You'll also want to consider whether your VPN is blocked by your streaming service, so test with the VPN on at home first.

The “ultimate” wifi package on YVR-SYD last week was able to support Disney+ streaming.

You may need a VPN for TSN at some point on the flight. I was able to connect to Bell with a VPN and stream in ok quality (I just tried it to test it out and didn’t watch for any length of time so YMMV).

VPN potentially overcomes AC blocking services like Netflix or YouTube, and might help with throttling, but with the ATG system, the bandwidth often simply isn't there to stream.

I've updated the wiki to make clear which system is installed on which type of aircraft. A source at AC that I consider to be reliable also confirmed that the widebodies we noted as no WiFi/unknown all have WiFi, so I've cleaned that all up.

Any updates on the problem with login using Elite wifi access? Has this been fixed?

Ron.

This is a fabulous resource, and the hard work is appreciated. Is it a possibility to add info on which planes now are capable of showing live TV on their IFE? Or is that worth a separate thread?

The live TV feature doesn't appear to correlate exactly with WiFi - only aircraft with the GoGo 2Ku system offer it, but not all 2Ku aircraft have it. So there's clearly some hardware and/or software separate from on-board WiFi that's needed for the TV offering. I have zero information beyond the fact that only 40 aircraft have live TV available, but there are far more than 40 of the types they've said will offer it 777s, 787s, 333s, and 223s - off the top of my head, those types total over 100 - and there's no combination of the full sub-fleet of those types that adds up to 40, so it's not like they've launched it on all of the 787s or all 223s and all 333s.

As such, the Live TV thread would probably be the best place for such a wiki to live.

Is there any update from AC on the status of 737max wifi? This seems to be a pretty big miss here - Alaska 7M9 has wifi - why doesnt AC? This is really a frustrating part of AC these days especially to the USA.

I am flying AC for the first time in a while to go back home for Christmas - ALL maxes....wish AS flew to YYZ.....

If there was, I'm sure someone would have posted it.

They chose a bad product from a supplier that apparently hasn't been able to rectify the problems despite 3+ years to do so.

I would assume that they are trying to resolve it with Thales? Or are they just going to rip it out for 2ku - we know that works!

Do you guys know on what to do when we’re about to login to aeroplan account to connect from super elite benefits wifi, sometimes it froze. The plane that’s going in circle stops all of sudden. Any tricks on how to rectify this?

Happens all the time. If you want to buy a pass though, of course, that works without any issues

Whenever this happens to me I connect to the chat help and make them give me a code for a pass. They always do.
