It requires a NFC (Near Field Communication) chip, which are found on some blackberries (9900s), some Android devices, and not on iPhones. Some SIM cards also contain NFC if I am not mistaken, but they just arent very common these days. IMO, it is a good idea that needs some tweaking and maturation; it needs to be available for transactions greater than $50, and it needs some relatively bulletproof authentication service so that a stolen/lost phone doesnt end up being worse than a lost/stolen wallet.

Considering the top Android device (S3) sold 40 million devices already with NFC, I would think that there are a few more NFC equipped Androids than the NFC equipped Blackberries.

Just weird to start your exciting new technology with a dying brand of phones.

We'll see what happens with BB10 but I don't think it makes a difference.
Mobile payment is near useless for me considering the battery life of my phone...

I, for one, am quite happy that it's a BB app. From the people in my circles, there are far more business people using BBs than S3s (and iProducts).

I have an NFC enabled BB and it doesn't work. There's a message saying that my SIM card can't be verified and there's a number to call. Can't be bothered.

Sorry, but all the polls are showing that more Business/Enterprise workers are using Android and iPhones over BB.

I would love to see a poll here on FT, but I would be surprised if more that 25% of people here use BB.

Along with the other poster, my feeling is that there are not a lot of S3 devices sold to businesses in Canada. But that is just a guess. If you think it is the wrong approach, tell CIBC not me. I have no dog in the hunt.

Quick google did show this from last September: "Phones running Android now account for 36 per cent of the Canadian market, compared to 29 per cent for Apple and 27 per cent for RIM’s BlackBerry, the survey found." So hardly the case that BB is dead and gone. And my intuition would say that BB marketshare is higher in the business world and Android is lower than those stats would indicate.

I have a BB.

The deal is only if you have Rogers also. booOO

And I see polls where BB is still "phone of choice" for large enterprise. CIBC must agree if they put out an app for the BB only. Those BYOD media reports are overblown.

In the end, who cares? If you can't use an app, there are others who can.

Last time I was in Asia (a developing and key market) I saw mainly Androids being used.
(Sources-a business room in TPE, a bus in HKG, on the ferry to the PRC, in a hotel lobby at SIN)

You are right btw, smart phone market share is very dependent on geo. NA, Europe, and APAC are all quite different but quite homogenous internally. Japan is a bit of an exception IIRC, pretty big iPhone adoption there. In Canada, RIM surprisingly (?) retains significant market share. Of course, CIBC is Canadian, and there is a reasonable amount of infrastructure that supports NFC in Canada, so it does make some sense. (Apologies to AA_Expo if you are Canadian and this is just blindingly obvious, I can't see you location now that I am replying!)

It will be nice once it's more widespread, now it seems more of a field trial as it is too limited, Rogers+CIBC+Blackberry customers which must not the that many that are really tech savvy/interested in using it.

No problem.
Canadian by citizenship but HK resident for tax reasons.
You're right wrt iPhone in Japan.
That being said I think there is more infrastructure in place in the APAC region than in Canada (especially given how often people use NFC, I.e. that payment system in Tokyo and Octopus in HK is common even for very small transactions vs getting strange looks in Canada for using a CC on a .84 purchase)

The Octopus system is simply brilliant. It is one of several things about HK which is just genius. Yes I would live there in a heartbeat if I could find the right job.
