Aww, poor babies; NHL players miffed AC Jetz takes First class seats out

'We are exploring our options': Air Canada has removed first-class seats from most of its charter fleet

VANCOUVER — Several NHL teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, will not be travelling this season in quite the style to which they have become accustomed.

All seven Canadian NHL teams and a handful of other U.S.-based teams use Air Canada's Jetz executive-class charter service to travel during the season.

The aircraft are outfitted with first-class seating throughout the cabin, or at least they were. During the recently concluded National Hockey League lockout, Air Canada reconfigured five of its six charter jets and sent them back into regular passenger service.

That leaves just one plane that is completely outfitted with first-class seats. Goodbye leg room.

The Canucks only learned last week about the changes and are not happy about them.

Eff them .......... What's AC to do? Leave 4-5 jets in all-J config when they obviously can't deploy them profitably while these NHL negotiations drag on for months!?

2 weeks ago, the same players were vowing to cancel the season if their demands were not met. Now they expect every other business to turn on a dime when they decide to cave to owners.

Ante up ........ Fork out cash to charter 767 and everyone gets J.

Interesting...

I wonder if AC has a guaranteed minimum number of flights with each team (retainer) agreement or if the contract is simply on a per-flight basis? If it is per-flight I think they are well within their rights to reconfigure the aircraft as they see fit.

No terribly sympathetic to the NHL, but if they're paying for J configured a/c as part of a contract, then I can see why the'd be upset.

I like how they say they are looking at other options.

Ya, good luck..... How many planes of that size are configured all J + extra spacing between rows + have the cargo/luggage capacity?

They are better off NOT being asshats like they have been for the past 6 months and asking the airline nicely to reconfig.

Not sure why everyone is being so negative here and supporting AC... The teams have negotiated executive service in their contracts with AC which they aren't upholding.. AC reconfigured those planes on a gamble that a season wouldn't happen and that they would get to double dip..

Now the teams are mad that AC isn't holding up their end of the deal.. You have to understand, these teams are paying huge amounts of money to charter these planes ..

It's basically like us paying for a J seat and AC giving us a Y seat because we didn't travel in the regular pattern that we normally would have done.. It's BS.

Unless you are privy to the AC/Team contract this is pure speculation.

Agreed. Without full details of any contract, it's impossible to tell who's wrong here.

I believe we would have heard stronger language from the teams if AC was in violation of any contract.

Likely decision not to reconfig was madein September when lockout began. Reconfig was an expense the owners could not afford as it also came with a significant retainer. Paul Martin Liberals ran into the same issue when they refused the AC retainer in 2005. The Liberals ended up with 727 junker while attempting to run a green platform. Retainer issues came up again in Stephane Dion green shift campaign and the recent prof stuffy rendition. Each time the election campaign came only the liberals were left stranded.

I also believe there is a direct correlation with moving the E90 off YYC-YYZ transcons in favour of airbus and the NHL lockout.

Finally, the compressed NHL schedule might not allow for an adequate number of small sub fleet, rather each NHL team might need thierowndedicated aircraft. It is better to pull from the existing fleet.
