Personally I would say no way unless you have both Nexus and no checked bags. YYC customs can be absolutely horrible, and is relatively unpredictable and illogical as to when it is horrible. Meaning I dont know what time of day your flights are, but you might think--oh 10:30 on a weekday, customs wont be busy then. And then you see the 90 min waits. I would give yourself 2 hours for sure. Unless you have Nexus and no checked luggage.

I completely agree on this! Unless you have Nexus and no checked bags, one hour is cutting it WAY to fine for a transborder connection in YYC. Good luck!
:)

:)

Then again ignoring MCT is the easiest way to hidden city.
Then, I'll say 'the ticket was sold to me this way, I will get to ABC by myself'

Take the YYC connection. In the event of a mis-connect you can insist on AC rerouting you to EWR via YYZ on AC metal. AC protecting you on its own metal should give you a chance to upgrade and more miles than YYC-EWR.

Connection risks:
- Delays detected early in YQR are easiest to correct as there are options through YYZ.
- Delays detected late at YQR (e.g. just before boarding time or after boarding) are harder to correct as the YYZ flight leaves close to the time of the YYC.
- Trip interuptions in YYC are very tricky to correct as the last applicable YYZ rescue option leaves at 13:10 with an EWR departure time of 12:25. Once the OP enters YYC US CBP there are no further rescue options that do not involve and overnight in either YYC or YYZ.
- YYC detected trip interuption has the possibility of doing YYC-YVR-EWR for a really late arrival into EWR.

Guess fate made the decision for me ... EWR is now going to be a November excursion instead of Xmas (don't get to see the Xmas lights ... :P) my host (sister) will be in the UK the weekend I was planning to be in New York.

Thanks for all the advice though, would have been an interesting run :)

Or even better YYC (WS) YVR (CX) JFK.

The other option would be YQR-DEN-EWR on the morning DEN flight. That gives you an ORD flight and a DEN flight later in the day as plans B and C, not to mention getting rerouted on Air Canada via YYC, YWG or YYZ and then connecting to United there.

I find it really difficult to get attractive Air Canada fares to US destinations ex-YQR or to YQR. When I do, the routes are stupid and while the milk runner in me doesn't mind picking up a bunch of extra miles, if my wife is joining me she absolutely will not tolerate it. (e.g. Air Canada suggested EWR-YVR-YYZ-YQR to come home last June, and United suggested the more wife-friendly EWR-DEN-YQR :) ) Of course, if you have eUpgrades to use up, flying UA can be a negative.

(Incidentally, UA offered us a $297 round-trip upgrade to United First on the DEN-SAN and SAN-DEN segments of our San Diego trip in February - and they offered it as soon as I paid for the Y trip. Very odd, and accepted in a heartbeat.)

Let me revive this thread to ask about a possible connection:

I would like to take the LAS-YYC-YEG (and not the WestJet direct flight, because of miles) but the connection in YYC is only 61 minutes (MCT is 60). Arrival is 2219, departure is 2320.

Would that be feasible (i carry no bags)? Since it is the last flight to YEG, what would happen if connection is missed?

You are good, even with checked baggage.

The OP quoted above mentions WestJet in the AC forum, I should point out the LAS-YYC flight is the arrives at 22:19 in the current summer schedule (this route has a lot of movement in the recent past). No poster need to rise on point of order as the OP is taking the AC flight and this is the appropriate place to talk about AC Ops.

As to the OP question, yes any moderate delay on the LAS-YYC flight will have the poster missing the connection and spending the night in the land of poor hockey team and out of work oilfield workers (it will almost feel like home, but with a view of the mountains during the morning sunrise).

As always, having Nexus card will speed up the CBSA formalities and ensure a smooth connection. Expect about 5-10 minute wait for preboard security because the concourse C security will be down to one lane open at that time of night.

Should the OP get through preboard security in timely basis, the MLL is open for a night cap before the short hop to the land where the hockey career of first round draft picks die a slow, painful, death. :D

Haha, also time to visit MLL? Damn you are so optimistic that I am almost ready to hit "book now". Otherwise, I guess I will have to live with YYC

I am subjecting myself to my annual" see if YYC has figured out transborder transiting '

YEG-YYC-IAH, Sunday May 1st , 1 hr 40 mins lay over,

Probably most ideal for quick transit, ( won't risk YYC on normal work day ) I'll post the adventure upon completion

Well on board AC 8104

Took 50 mins from gate until through security and in Rockyy mountain lounge.
With Nexus , but had to wait for bag (12 mins in front luggage carousel )
Security after Customs painfully slow

Continues to be the YYC gong show I have grown to despise

Gone show will end this fall with the new terminal.

Last time I did a layover at YYC the whole thing took maybe 20 minutes, I got lucky though!

steveo May 1, 2016 4:32 pm

And the US departures lounge in YYC is probably the crappiest airport I have ever been to in Canada.
