Baggage Allowance - Multiple Carriers

Hi, In a couple of weeks we will be heading off on a J class mini -RTW. A couple of the legs are in Y as there was no J availability. I believe I am entitled to J benefits (Baggage, Lounge Priority Check-in for ALL legs). What I am not so certain about is the checked luggage weight and number of items allowed. The flights are

YOW- YYZ AC Y
YYZ - ORD UA Y
ORD - LAX UA F (aka J)
LAX - RAR NZ J
RAR - AKL NZ J
AKL - SYD NZ J
SYD - ICN OZ J
ICN - ORD OZ J
ORD -YOW UA Y

It's not so much the number of items I am concerned about, but the weight limit. I am hoping it will be 32Kg / 70lb each item, and 2 items per person.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Why can't anything be simple with AC/AP.

Checked with AP, they confirmed baggage as 2x32kg as I am on a J booking, even though flying the first leg in Y. They advised I check with the other airlines on the itinerary to see what their allowance was.

Checked with UA they said the allowance was 3 *32Kg and confirmed that this was true even though the first leg was in Y

Checked with Air NZ, they said they base the luggage allowance on that of the first ticketed carrier, in this case AC so 2x32kg is good

Checked with OZ, they said they base the luggage allowance on that of the first ticketed carrier, in this case AC so 2x32kg SHOULD be good BUT there is an annotation on the booking file that says only 1 bag allowed on the first leg, so that will prevail and I'll be restricted to 1 bag only. I was told that that if AC removed the 1 bag comment than I would be allowed 2 bags as per AC J class policy.

Phoned AP, explained the situation. I was told that I was only entitled to 1 bag at 20Kg as I was booked in Y. Seems the fact that I was on a J class reward meant nothing, it was the class of travel that counted. In addition I was NOT allowed J class check-in or Lounge access:mad: Not a happy camper, asked nicely if the agent would check this info as I had previously been told that J class perks would be available regardless of class of travel. Reluctantly she went away to check and 10 minutes later came back with an apology ^ and confirmed that J class perks would be available including baggage. Bad news was that she could not change the 1 bag annotation on the itinerary, AC would have to do that.

Phoned AC, AC said he couldn't do anything as it was an AP ticket, however he would phone AP and get it sorted. When he came back he was apologetic and said AP had told him, that as I was flying in Y then Y baggage rules applied:mad: Sorry, can't help call AP.

Called AP, got the most helpful person I have spoken to in long time, she confirmed J perks apply, changed the itinerary to reflect 2x32Kg regardless of class of travel, re-issued the tickets and apologised for the hoops I was made to jump through.

All sorted finally. Why do customers have to go through this cr!p, I could understand if the agent said sorry I am not sure of the rules, let me check, but to outright tell me something that is totally untrue and unfounded should never happen.

Hopefully all will go well on the day of travel.

Good news was, in 4 calls to AP throughout the day each call was picked up by an agent on the first ring, and that was using the pleb number.

I ran into a similar problem today. I tried to OLCI my son for his trip to KSC.
He's got no status and he's traveling YXU - YYZ - IST - VIE - KSC in J, except for the first segment. The first segment is in Y, since there is no J on this flight. He plans to take 2 bags. AC's website tried to charge me for the extra bag and then cancelled the OLCI. The itinerary doesn not expressly say the baggage allowance, just states the general rules. The baggage allowance on a domestic Y flight would be one 23 kg bag. However, the allowance on international flights should be 2 x 32 kg. So which one is it?
Does anyone have some experience with this?

Generally from what I understand, you have the luggage allowance for the longest flight in your itinerary. ie. I flew CPT - JNB - IAD - YYZ, switching planes at each airport and I got 2x23kg for the whole trip even though I was on domestic flights for 2 parts of it. Best bet is to check with the airlines and see what they say. You might have to print out the luggage info and bring it to the airport to stop any conflicts from arising.

Well, I printed it and forgot to take it...sure enough, a conflict arose. The check in agent insisted on charging me $100. I repeatedly asked him to call his supervisor, but he refused. He finally gave in when I mentioned that every other segment is in J. Which is again not right since TK is the MSC. So his allowance wold be 2 x 23 kg...
To add insult to the injury, he lost his seat 3A due to the failed OLCI. He's now in 4E, which is about the worst seat in J cabin. So, for today's performance AC has a big :td:
PS: TK too
