Air Canada, pilots ink deal on sports charter

Air Canada has reached a deal with its pilots to start up a new sports charter operation as it continues to seek out new revenue to compensate for a drop in traffic since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Don Johnson, president of the Air Canada Pilots Association, the pilots' union, said the deal would see up to four planes shifted to the new charter wing, which would fly professional sports teams between games.

"It's going to be dedicated crews, which the sports teams like to have," he said.

Air Canada is also expanding into other new areas to shift employees away from its mainline operation. Its new discount brand, Tango, will launch service Thursday, staffed by existing employees.
