Layover in NRT

Hi all,

Helping plan my high school's trip to Japan this summer. We currently have a 2 hour connection in NRT and then are going on to OKA. Flying in on AC and continuing on NH so at least connection will be in the same terminal. Is this too tight a layover for 19 people as we have to go through customs? I've been to Narita a couple times but with nowhere near this many people. Will talk to AC and see if we can be shuttled through quickly but doubt they'll be of much assistance. Thanks for any input!

2 hours is plenty of time. Customs lines can be long, but you should be clear in anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour.

Being Japan - it's very efficient and organized. There are AC and NH staff on hand, and should your connection be running overly tight they will gather and escort. On occasion I have had the gate staff ask for certain customers with tight connections to identify themselves. As previously stated, 2 hours is plenty of time.

Since everyone will forget to fill in the backside of the card, add on another 30 min for that.

On the other spectrum, we have an 11 hour layover coming in from BKK heading to YVR. Having never been to NRT what would people recommend to as a distraction from hanging out in the lounge. Is there a problem with checked baggage and/or a place to store carry on while exploring?

Definitely enough time to make a trip to TYO and enjoy the sights and sounds for the day.

There are plenty of guides online so you can put together a nice little itinerary.

One of the attendants in the NH F lounge stored my carry-on there while I went out exploring during my 11-hour layover. If you have lounge access, you could ask there what the storage options are. My checked bags stayed with NH.

If you've never experienced the sights and sounds of dynamic downtown Tokyo it is definitely worth seeing. If however you're looking for something with a slightly calmer pace the town of Chiba which is in between Narita and Tokyo is easily reached by the JR Sobu Rapid Line (35-40mins). Nice little town with parks, gardens, museums and good restaurants is an alternative. With an 11 hour layover, I'd definitely venture out.

If you look on the Narita airport site it gives you options and directions for sightseeing depending on your layover time.

Since you appear to be a group of 19, you might want to look into renting a small tour bus with guide to pick you up and take you around Tokyo for the day. There are lots of possible interesting itineraries depending on the age and interests of your group.

Actually you can even venture out to Narita city for a walk around and maybe lunch before returning for your flight.

Two companies that should be able to offer you a quotation for this idea:
http://www.limousinebus.co.jp/en/charter/
http://www.hatobus.com/en/faq.html

Some train prices for comparison:
To Narita city (10mins - Keisei) - fare is 250 yen (one way) per person
To Tokyo (45mins - Keisei Skyliner) - 2,400 yen (one way) per person
Timetables at http://www.hyperdia.com/

Coin operated lockers at Narita airport (300 to 500 yen per calendar day)
http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/guid...st/svc_07.html

Places to see in the towns around Narita airport (boondocks not served well by public transportation, but you could arrange a little bus tour around these parts ... but I expect your group would rather go to Tokyo if you're chartering a bus)

OP has a 2-hour connection. No way to get to Tokyo and back in two hours. Another poster has a 11 hour connection. No mention of how many in his/her party. Maybe nice to rent a bus even for 2 people.

Thank you for all the replies. We will have lounge access, although only to the business class lounge, so we will check there for storage options first.

We were looking at the Narita City option, but didn't know about Chiba, so will check that one out too. TYO is definitely an interest, but I always worry about heading into a city I'm not familiar with a limited time to go to and get back from. I think there would be too many distractions there that might keep us there longer than we should.
