Calculating Award Flight Fuel Surcharges

Hi all,

I'm currently looking to book to flights, either Economy or Business for this upcoming December. My issue is, I currently have the points in Amex MR and don't want to transfer them to Aeroplan until I can figure out what the surcharges are.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on figuring out the surcharges. I tried calling up Aeroplan...but they weren't much help, to say the least.

I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone have 125K points sitting around in their aeroplan account that could check and see how much the surcharges would cost? As that's the only way I currently know how to find out what the charges are.

I could PM or post the itineraries I'm interested in if anyone can help. Thanks!

An easy way to get an estimate is to put the itinerary into ITA, and see what the taxes/YQ is there (making sure to remove the fares and YQ for airlines that don't charge). It's a rough estimate, but comes out pretty close to what they actually charge you. Your itinerary is fairly YQ-friendly as the only airline that you're flying that aeroplan charges YQ for is TG (and a short LH leg). UA, LX, TK all don't have YQ (for now).

Based on ITA, your first itinerary would be ~$680, and your second would be ~$520.

Thanks, dinosims. I'm trying that method on ITA, but can't get those particular flights to show up. I'm going through the multi-destination tab, and plugging in RDU-HAN, HAN-ATH, ATH-RDU and can't find those flights. Am I missing something?

I just checked for you, using the Aeroplan site.

Option 1: $641.10
Option 2: $516.10

Hope that helps!

Can MR miles/points be moved into US or UA/CO accounts? You could save about 80% of those charges booking in either of those programs rather than AE.

Nope, I believe I'm limited to Aeroplan when it comes to MR.

Not anymore with CO sadly.

Use ITA to map out your route for fuel surcharge checking. Usually its right on, but Aeroplan can be more if they charge shorthaul AC YQ on your tickets.

ITA works by searching for a limited time, and then displaying the results without regard to if there are additional options (that might be cheaper). In order to display the results you want, you have to use the routing rules. For instance, for your first leg, you would type "UA EWR UA FRA TG BKK TG". That would get you the flights that you want. The rest follows the same pattern, specifying the airline and the intermediate/connecting airports.

Good to see ITA wasn't too far off - thanks highfly3r.
