Myself and 3 family members joined on the same day in 1997. Two are pretty much consecutive 960 xxx xxx, one has a 760x, while another has a 530x. Another joined in 2000 and has a 758x, while another joined in 2004 and has a 941x.
Going by the 4 of us who joined on the same day and got those 3 number sets, I'd say it's somewhat random. Other programs these days however seem to be consecutive - eg. US, F9, BA.
The 627421 bin number is the Issuer Identification Number, similar to the 4xxx xxxx xxxx xxxx that visas have and 5xxx that mastercards have. Other cards with the 62xx include Sears cards and Disney rewards cards issued by Chase. I would assume that this indicates that Aeroplan plans on having increased functionality for the cards sometime in the future, though for what purpose is anybody's guess.
The single digit is presumed to simply be a checksum.

I joined March 2, 1989. 153 xxx xxx
At the time AE charges $25 to join. I flew a couple of times to Washington, DC for meetings. There was no direct flights back then. We had to fly either AC or US air to a US city (Cleveland, Phillie, or others), then connect to US air to get to DC. Being patriotic I choose AC for the first leg.
I joined US air's FF program free. I also sent in my AE application with a letter. In the letter I said all their competitors had free FF programs (I didn't say their Canadian competitor CP also charged a fee). They can enrol me free. Or they can remain uncompetitive if they still want to charge, as I would not join then and will choose to fly with their competitors.
A few weeks later they sent me my membership package, together with a letter saying they decided to make AE membership free to join. All my families and friends joined AE free after that.

Are Aeroplan #'s linked to time?
So, are Aeroplan #'s sequential when it comes to time of signup?
A few of us on email here (all FTers) seem to disagree.
A few data points, my parents signed me up when I was a kid (say around 1995 but I can't be sure - can I check?). Another signed up around 2000, and his is higher in # than mine. However, two recent members are very far apart.
Thoughts?
Here's a data point, maybe you can post yours?
Post first 3 #'s and year or estimated year of signup.
116 - signed up 1995 ish.

Sign into the website, go to the "Your Account" tab.
A few lines down, on the left, you'll see "You have been a valued Aeroplan Member since" with the date.
I start at 360, and joined in 1999.
