Where's a cheap but good place to fly from YVR?

I have seen YVR from the roadway but have never flown from it. I want to. I looked online and it seems (correct???) that the U.S. gates are separated from the rest of the airport and boring. Therefore, I think that a flight to another country or within Canada would be more interesting in terms of exploring YVR.

Where is a cheaper place to fly from YVR that is half way interesting? I don't care to do just a mileage run but want to see YVR and another place.

Is it Calgary? Anything to see there?
Toronto? Plenty to see but not too cheap.
City in Asia? Plenty to see, depending on the city, but not cheap.
(Not Victoria because one could easily take the ferry)
Whitehorse? Anything to see there? Might be expensive to fly there?

Depending when you fly, cheap would be YYC/LAX/LAS and all three of those cities you can find interesting and fun things to do.....or drive to belignham and fly out of there and its was cheaper!

But driving to Bellingham means that I don't see the airside part of YVR, which I want to. Also LAX or LAS means that I'd use the U.S. gates, which I think looks boring.

So is it YYC?

YVR airside is boring. US gate areas are marginally different from Dom/Int.

The nicest airside area at YVR are the international gates.

The cheapest flights out of there are the Fifth-Freedom flights - Specifically YVR-LAS on PR or YVR-JFK on CX.

If all you want to do is explore airside,
buy a latitude fare, go exploring, refund ticket, go home.

The Fairmont at YVR overlooks airside - and would probably give you a nice view, but I've never stayed there... i've always foolishly chosen to stay at the old one that's downtown so that I could take some mutt that they pass of as a respectable hotel dog for a 20 minute walk. A "Canine Ambassador" they call him. Of course, the dog is so poorly trained that the entire "walk" is spent trying to prevent said dog from eating garbage and getting sick... and when I complain to the manager, I aways get the old "Our usual dog is on vacation"

But maybe someone can comment on Fairmont YVR for you... and of course you'd need to make sure they give you a room that overlooks airside - though it may be that they all do, from what I recall about my reservation last summer, before i cancelled and opted again for the freaking hotel dog... and guess what, Beau and the other one were on vacation, so they had a replacement dog... AGAIN

This video about the dogs is the most misleading video I've EVER seen:

So MAKE sure you confirm with someone who has stayed at the YVR one that the rooms do really overlook the airport and give you a nice view of airside!!

Cheap is a few hundred dollars, preferably less than $500.

Good is a place where you go to and enjoy the trip. Toronto is definitely good. I don't know anything about Calgary. San Francisco and New York are also good but those flights use the U.S. gates. Maybe CX to JFK doesn't????

Buy a latitude ticket to London. Check-in early and spend some time at the YVR international terminal. Call AC 1 hour before departure and cancel your ticket and get a full refund. Drive home. Your total cost will be your parking

They post clear in the US.
Oh, and don't listen to the poster that said buy a latitude ticket.
Buy a full fare J ticket instead so that you can help another pax clear the WL.
