Relocating question
 

An off topic question but seems most appropiate here as we talk about everything about Canada and i don't see much help posting this in "Buzz" or "General Traveltalk". I apologize in advance if it's way off topic.

I will most likely be relocating to YVR from YYZ in late August. My question is would it be better to move my vehicle with me to YVR as well or get a new car there? What would the cost be like? I am not prepared to drive the car out to YVR.

matintin and I were talking about this not long ago. It depends on the value of your car. If it is of reasonable value then it makes sense to either put it on a train or have it driven out somehow. If not, then the cost of wear & tear etc and the voyage would be more trouble than it's worth. In the situation we discussed, the car was too old and of little value, so it would not have made sense to drive it out or pay for shipment. Hope this helps for ideas!

Fly to Edmonton or Calgary and buy a new car in Alberta (no sales tax), drive it into BC. But FB is correct. Depends on the state of your current car and what you are looking for. Supply is often tigher in BC on some models, so delivery time may be a problem. If this move is truly happening, those of us in the YYZ area -- friends and "foes" alike -- must give you a fitting Good-Bye in person.

If you purchase a car in Alberta, do you have to give an Alberta address to avoid the PST?

One thing to consider - the retail value of thecar would be low as it is not a "BC car" - your car would have lots of salt induced rust, something that is not seen in BC http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Coincidentally, two other FTers are also relocating to YVR - I expect to move out there by September, and I understand matintin is contemplating moving there as well at about the same time

I am a car dealer and we move vehicles all the time.

Rail freight to Toronto is $825 + GST from Vancouver and $650 from Calgary.

I don't think you need to have an Alberta address. If you buy it in Alberta, no PST, only GST. In recent dealings with car dealerships, the salesperson mentioned that there are even people from the US coming up to Alberta to buy cars and drive them back down!

The only problem may be when you insure it in BC, they will likely charge you PST on the original purchase price. This may vary depending on whether it is a new or used car.

CPYVR is correct. IIRC, BC will charge you sales tax on your car when you register it here, unless the jurisdiction you purchased the car in has a higher sales tax than B.C. does.

To avoid paying PST in BC, the vehicle must have been purchased at least 90 days prior to being registered in BC, and it must have been registered in another jurisdiction (i.e. Alberta) also for 90 days, otherwise you'll get dinged for the PST.

Cool about you moving to YVR. Soon Vancouverites will outnumber all others on FlyerTalk. After that, we'll set our sights on taking over the world.

I guess we'll have to have a welcoming party in YVR as well. Or maybe we could all fly out to YYZ, commandeer the J cabin of a plane, and party all the way from YYZ to YVR.
