Air Canada baggage handlers, cleaners walk out to support strikers

Aleysha Haniff Staff Reporter

Air Canada workers who remain on the job briefly walked out at Pearson International Airport Wednesday morning in a show of support for their striking fellow employees.

Between 200 and 300 baggage handlers, mechanics and cabin service cleaners stopped working for about 25 minutes starting around 9 a.m., said Boyd Richardson, a spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

“Our members were showing some solidarity to our CAW brothers and sisters” in opposition to the government’s threat to impose back-to-work legislation, Richardson said.

The workers gathered in the commuter area for shorter flights, Richardson said, where marching members of the CAW could see them.

Air Canada’s 3,800 customer service workers walked off the job early Tuesday after talks failed to resolve wages and pension issues.

Wednesday’s walkout in support of the strikers was not authorized by the machinists’ union, Richardson said.

Is that legal?

I assume AC will be docking the 200-300 people 25 minutes pay for this display.

No it is NOT legal to do so and given that those Unions are under an expired collective agreement soon to be re-negotiated IMO is STUPID!
