Pilots door popped open during take-off

During takeoff on my flight from YXE to YYZ last night, as the plane was climbing the door popped open, being in the isle I had a good few of what the pilots were doing. In any event, does this happen often? I thought those doors were suppose to be pretty secure?

I've had it happen on a Dash 8 on the ground. Ground crew connected the heaters to the aircraft and presurized it by accident (they're apparently not supposed to do that until the door to the outside is open). Anyhow, everyone's ears popped and the cockpit door popped open.

As far as on your trip, it's likely it just wasn't latched all the way.

Happens occasionally. The pilots will not pay attention to it due to sterile cockpit rules below 10,000ft. Anyone that would be stupid enough to make a up hill run for the door would be beaten pretty quickly by anyone near.

I've seen it happen on a Dash8 on take off as well. FA re-secured it after takeoff. No biggie.

Happens on the CRJ from time to time, scares the heck out of the FA when the door hits the back of the jumpseat.

Dash 8s and CRJs have the cockpit door also utilized as the back of the jumpseat chair. If the door is not locked when the jumpseat is utilized, the door will fling open on rotation. Pretty good ab work out to get oneself upright before the plane levels off.

Happened to me on an E190 ex-YYT - I was in 1A, so I had a neat view.

I was non-reving on an America West 737 flight in a first class aisle seat when that happened once and I could get a glimpse of the action. That was pre-9/11 though, so the doors weren't reinforced and the 737 cockpit door keys across the fleet were identical. It's more alarming that that would happen so much in this day and age.

Used to fly up the coast of Labrador on Air Lab's Twin Otters, and they had the equivalent of the sheet for a door. Verry intimant flying experience! Lots of fun when the pilot says he sees some seals and would we like to go lower to check it out. :-)

That's a pretty traumatic experience - you should demand compensation.

On the Beechcraft the doors are always open. I guess they have nothing to hide!!
